Interview with Allo Thompson

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My first project I worked on was an album called Genesis. It was by a group called F.A.B and I was featured and wrote a large amount of it. There are songs on there that people still approach me about today 5 years later and that experience taught me so much about what I do now.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am currently work on my on EP that will be dropping this year once I'm finished shooting my music videos.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Yes Jamila Thompson is a female singer and songwriter she's extremely good with vocal harmonies and adding flavor to your tracks especially if your looking for more female RnB or Pop songs.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Me personally I use digital just because its easy to move around. I bring my studio on the go with me and it is very convenient for me.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise that whatever task you give me, I will never give half effort. Whether it's your first song or your 53rd. I want the song write to be the best song in your catalog.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: To me a good songwriter has to be very book and street smart at the same time. I love flexing my creative muscles and my favorite part is exporting that final version and hearing all that hard work over and over.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: They ask me what my writing process is. It really all depends on a song by song basis. They ask about the time frame. I am naturally a quick writer but the further outside of my style you go the longer it may take.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Writer'd block is very easy to get, and no matter who your favorite artist is he/she has gotten it plenty of times in their career.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I ask what type of mood are you looking for. What is the subject matter and what song and artist that's out there is similar to it.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Make sure your as specific as you can be about what your vision is. I can try my very hardest to replicate what I think you want and the more information you give me the closer I can get. Don't be afraid to say something you don't like, it is your song right?

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: A book, a cooking pan, a knife, a drum, and a pen and pad.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I am a Rapper and an Actor. I have been in many films such as Barbershop 3 and The Hate U Give and I have also been creating and releasing music for the past 5 years. I even got 3 of my own songs placed in a movie I am starring in called "Freshman Year" so I take both sides very seriously.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is a mixture of RnB and rap. I fall into the same category as Drake, Tory Lanez, or Bryson Tiller. I am a very good rapper, studying many lyricists growing up. I also love melodies and catchy songs that the ladies can vibe to as well.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Kanye West. He is a huge inspiration to me because of his dedication to musicality and being yourself no matter what. And allowing the audience to get to know him through his songs.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: A production tip for me is to learn how to use your voice. Everyone sounds different, and your voice is what makes you unique. Even if I write something for you it is still your job to make it your own. Learn what makes you so appealing to listen to and work everything around that. Your beats, your flow, even how your mixed.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on RnB music and rap music.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is theming. If i have a song with a particular vibe or subject matter I can make the song both cohesive and catchy. Whether it's story telling, or writing a love song about a particular person, or even how a person is feeling. I try not to make my writing random.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I make sure the song is structured in a way that is satisfying to the listener. Making sure there is a hook, pre hook, and powerful verses with strong beginnings and endings. I make sure the whole song is cohesive to one subject and one verse leads into the other. I am also very good at catchy melodies that the audience can easily sing along to.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Usually I will search for a beat that not only fits the vibe of the song but I also think is quality enough to fit on a hit song or project. Then I start work on a catchy and great sounding hook that will be the anchor of the song. Then I work on the verses, usually in order. I make sure the first couple of lines are punchy and memorable.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a home studio I have built that includes Mackie CR8 speakers. I work on an iMAC computer. I have a Blue Yeti Pro mic with M - audio MIDI interface, and I work on Logic pro X

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I am inspired by people like Drake, Bryson Tiller, J Cole, Kanye West and even T Pain. I love catchy melodies and relatable verses that can resonate with people. I also grew up on Earth, Wind, and Fire and Stevie Wonder.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I am a songwriter who's been making my own music as well as others for 5 years now.
