Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I like to believe my music is inspired by great musicians & bands . Simple , catchy songs ; performed on a guitar . Know one wants to be reading books about Algebra when there listening to music ! I like keeping things simple . Three or four chords ; Verse , Bridge , Chorus & bang ! you’ve nailed it ! It’s gotta be catchy , hooks & melody’s ... right ? That’s what The Beatles done !
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I sit down with an acoustic guitar or an iPad ; depending on what sort of sound I’m visualising , work out what key the songs gonna be in ; so I know what chords I’m working with ; pick up a note pad and a decent pen & start writing down chord sequences that sound good to the ear . Then I start structuring & adding key changes for example . Then you pretty much have the foundations of a song . I usually demo my tracks first ; in garage band on an iPad , lay down a beat , with the chords over the top . Then I airdrop it into Logic Pro X , work out my BPM lay down a drum track , refer to my chords & start laying down guitar tracks , bass guitar & vocal tracks ; pianos , strings , orchestration . You get me ? Then once everything is recorded , I start the mixing process . Stereo Panning , Binaural panning , bussing , Automation , fade in/out levelling out . I think the key to it is getting a decent balance of Eq & Compression in the mix . Get all my meters right then bounce the project & master it . I do my final masters using LANDR .
