Interview with Thony Ritz

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: As a teenager i discovered the filtered house music and the samples of this movement, it was a true revelation. Influenced by funk music, disco music and Jean Michel Jarre, i have listened to since my childhood, i produced my first pieces at the age of 10 in 1992 with a binary synthetizer and record my first tracks on Amiga trying to imitate the author of Oxygene. The revolution of myspace will play in my favour. Hundreds of thousands of sights will enable me to make the buzz on house music forums. Discovered on the platform by My Major Company, i join the participative label which will offer me a chance. I impose myself as the first electro artist produced by My Major Company. Consecration of work! After a well noticed maxi single “High Future", I release my first album "Night City" in 2010 on Warner Music. Mixing the French touch’s hedonism of the first period (Crydamoure, the Knight Club) with saturated sounds of the second wave, i tried to reconcile the popular mainstream techno beats and the more underground and aesthetic electro sounds of the 80′s. 2 videos from this album were played on French TV, MTV & MCM... In 2019 i graduated from Abbey Road Institute in "Music Production and Sound Engineering" after a year spent learning and working in one of the biggest studios in france "Le Studio Oméga".

  3. Q: How would you describe your style?

  4. A: Influenced a lot by all the funky and pop music of the early 80s with elements of electronic music. My style is maybe regarded as "French House".

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: I would love to work with artists like Alan Braxe, Disclosure, Oliver, Breakbot and so many more... i love their productions... And Jay Kay from Jamiroquai... i'm sure that we could make a great track together ahah.

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: Focal Alpha 80 & Prodipe Pro 8 for the monitoring. My audio interfaces are an Antelope Discrete 8 and a little SSL 2+. I compose on a Komplete Kontrol S49 and use an E-MU SP 1200 for sampling. I use two DAW : Ableton Live 10 most of the time to compose, create some beats... and Protools to mix... and a lot of plugins from FabFilter, Waves, Izotope, Arturia, Uhe, Spectrasonics...

  9. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  10. A: I am truly proud of everything I work on, but one thing I am particularly proud of is my first album "Night City". I was the first electro artist to be able to release an album on a major (Warner Music) thanks to the crowdfunding system with MyMajorCompany and to 952 people who participated in this project.

  11. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  12. A: I am currently working on my third album and some remixes for two different clients in France.

  13. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  14. A: Both. Analog gear is very cool and i'm always using my SP 1200 but today with the progress of technology we can do everything "in the box" and it sounds !!! It's more practical and simpler for recalls...

  15. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  16. A: If they know what they want, i promise that they will be thrilled with whatever I do.

  17. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  18. A: The ability to do something that you love and have obsession for. Knowing that people like your music and want to work with you to make their tracks to the top.

  19. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  20. A: That I only like House music. I love pushing my production chops into new territories 'cause I draw inspiration from multiple genres.

  21. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  22. A: What are your goals? - What do you expect me to bring to the project? - Can you provide any reference tracks?

  23. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  24. A: Use commercially available songs to convey your vision rather than only using words. When selecting them, keep the following in mind: - You want to select tracks with a similar vibe, tempo and sound of your song - Aim high: pick the most successful, and best sounding, examples...

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: There are no rules, never stop experimenting... when it sounds, it sounds !!!

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: As an Electro producer i'm known for creating a type of French House, Nu-disco, Deep/Funky House which became a signature sound for me. I have been able to utilise lots of sub-genre elements from disco, electro, techno, pop...

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: My strongest skill comes in finding the right sample, the right synth sound ,compose a fat groovy bass on it... and my use of compression and EQs.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: I bring some groove with funky basses, good kicks and a pumpy compression on drums to make people dance.

  33. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  34. A: Daft Punk of course, and all the "French Touch" scene since the begining (Alan Braxe, Cassius...) I have always inspired by Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Jamiroquai, Cerrone, Jean-Michel Jarre and a lot of funky & disco music too...

  35. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  36. A: Music production is something I do on a daily basis for my personal projects. The most common type of work I do for my clients is remixing, mixing tracks and mastering.
