Mastering Engineer & Album Producer Award-Winning Credits

Alastair McNeill on SoundBetter

Mastering engineer and award-winning producer for Chris Eckman and Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, specialising in electronic, indie, jazz and singer-songwriter records — plus full-album production for artists building a cohesive body of work.

I master records for clarity, depth and musical movement without flattening what makes them individual. Every master is personally carried out by me: no automated or AI mastering.

I work with electronic, indie, jazz, folk and singer-songwriter music from my studio in Ljubljana, delivering release-ready stereo masters for singles, EPs and albums. I also take on a small number of full-album production projects: helping artists shape the sound and arc of a complete record from early ideas to final master.

Selected mastering credits: Intention, Intensity, Shuffle — Zhlehtet (2026); The Only Thing I Know — Žigan & Kristijan Krajnčan (2026); Faded Worlds Suite — Zhlehtet (2025); Pieces for Collective Change — Rok Zalokar & Zhlehtet (2025); A Plea for Tenderness — Lenart De Bock (2025); Vrt — Zhlehtet (2024); Poletje Loops — Zhlehtet (2023).

Alongside mastering, I am an award-winning producer: co-producer, recording engineer and mixer on Chris Eckman’s German Record Critics’ Award-winning Where the Spirit Rests; producer, engineer and instrumentalist on The Land We Knew the Best, recognised among the top 200 Americana albums. My production work for Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip is also award-winning. I work remotely worldwide and welcome a clear brief, reference tracks and your intended release format.

Interview with Alastair McNeill

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The recent album for Chris Eckman, him winning the German critics award was a very nice surprise and the general feedback for the utmost audio quality of this record. I recorded, mixed and produced the record.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A hip-hop project built on live band improvisations to tape, passing the material from full jams to loops, back to tape, to the computer for arranging for the MC.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both. Horses for courses and it matters less and less. I've worked on entirely digital generative electronic must to doing everything to tape all the way to vinyl without it touching a computer. All paths are valid and we'll take whichever one suits.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: To give my all

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Freedom, challenges and the creative hurdles to overcome to see an artist shine.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: How much do you cost ;)

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: I try to be clear and honest, but perhaps that I make a certain genre of music when in-fact i do it all.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: Whats the outcome you desire and what's been stopping you from doing it yourself?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Write me and we can discuss your needs, we can tailor make any process that suits you. I'll be looking to deliver the highest quality work, but if I can help in one small part of your process it's also fine.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Laptop, Heaphones, guitar solar panel and Microphone.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I mixed my first record in 2008 and it was a success, because I'd already researched hard what it takes to make a record. Since then I've worked with many different artists, been on stage, been a pro musician, drummer, bass player, guitarist, synth guy and have the broader picture.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Stylish.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: All of them.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Sure! - Be free!

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: No usual, anything from Americana to Techno!

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: The bigger picture

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Edge and a bold defined aesthetic, emotion and delivery of the songs point.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: There's no typical, the process will define the outcome and I like to design a process that fits the artist and gets the most fun and efficient workflow. Whatever the music needs is what I'll do.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: Starts with the acoustically accurate room, choice outboard, nice amps, big modular and unique fx processing from pedals and boutique modular gear.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Ones that strive to take what we do to the highest professional level.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: An artist wants to make a record, I make that happen, I will typically record, or bring in remote recordings and start to build an aesthetic for the album. I play overdubs and experiment with sound design. I will mix the entire record and arrange mastering to deliver a world class record. I'm comfortable helping with writing and arranging if needs be depending on the artists wishes. I work a lot with vocalists to get the best out of their sound and performance, but equally at home. I do a lot of reamping, sending tracks into real space or through funky gear and pedals to get away from the same old sounds, also entirely comfortable in the digital realm!
