Alex "Shugg" Sugarman on SoundBetter

What's up producers!? If you're looking for someone to bring your song to life, I'm your guy! I am an LA based singer/songwriter/producer with 10+ years experience writing and performing.

Available services: Vocal Session Work, Lyric Writing, and Toplining.

I graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2014 with a degree in singing and production. Since moving to LA, I have worked consistently as a vocalist/songwriter with anything from GRAMMY nominated producer teams to EDM duos to major publishing companies and beyond.

I recently finished my first contract writing and producing an EP of 5 songs for Warner Bros Entertainment for their TV/Film Catalogue. In the past year, I also traveled the world performing on cruises singing all different kinds of music. My experience in performance, writing, and production is extensive. I'm open to many genres but my favorites are Top 40s Pop, Rnb/Soul, Urban Pop, and EDM. Check out my reel!

Your project is important to me and I promise to be adaptive and easy to work with. I genuinely love what I do and will work tirelessly to help your song reach its potential. On top of writing and singing, I have the tools and professional experience to deliver radio-ready recordings.

It usually takes a couple days to finish a song. Upon completion (max 7 days, usually 3-4 days,) if you'd like any edits, I'll do two revisions free and beyond that it's $50 per revision.

Interview with Alex "Shugg" Sugarman

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: Mickey Shiloh! That's the homie.

  3. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  4. A: Singing wise, I like to think my voice has a unique edge and power that is very rare in singers, especially guy singers. Also, my range and falsetto are pretty formidable spanning about 4 octaves. I enjoy writing all different kinds of songs but many times it's the songs where I am at the edge of my range, pouring my soul into every word, fully emotionally committed, that inspire me the most and separate me.

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: Belive in and be patient with yourself. Many times with production, you need to start with a basic small idea and build it up from there. Sometimes it's easy to give up in the beginning if you feel like your idea isn't coming along fast enough but I find that many of my best ideas have grown from ones I didn't think had promise.

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: RnB, Top 40s Pop

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: I'm really good at coming up with hooks. Many of my songs are catchy, memorable,

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: Like many other writers, I have experience writing in many scenarios but I would say my favorite would have to be having the music first (whether I produced it or it was given to me.) To me, the music inspires the message of the song.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: I use the legendary AKG 414 XLII (the golden mic.) The mic delivers crisp, bright vocals every time and is an awesome mic. My interface is the Universal Audio Apollo Duo Core, excellent preamps to help the mic speak. I use a fully loaded 2014 27 inch iMac. As far as software is concerned, I produce all my recordings in Logic X and use plugins from Waves to the Fab Filters to Antares Autotune and Melodyne and beyond. I also use many different filters to help deliver many of the cool fx you hear on the radio, spotify and beyond.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: Stevie Wonder is my all-time favorite singer and top three favorite artists. My life changed forever when I first heard his music. My other favorite artists would be MJ, Muse, Miguel, Pink Floyd, Frank Ocean, The Beatles, EWF, JT...just a snapshot, there are so many more!
