Jason has been one of the easiest session musicians I have ever worked with. He needs very minimal direction to deliver nothing but stellar guitar arrangements. He is the first guitar player I turn to in terms of my own track productions everytime.

Interview with Jason Swanson
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: "A Brother's Love" is something I tracked multiple layers of acoustic and electric guitar on, and I feel I helped bring the song to a higher level with the solo portion especially.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Tracking a debut album from 60's Rock n' Roll group, as well as tracking acoustic guitar on a new-age pop song.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Thomas Daniel, who is a superb vocalist and musician. Check him out!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, because I want to spend the most amount of time I can working on making great music, not with tons of outboard analog gear.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That I will deliver a well played, well engineered recording that fits the project's needs.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love solving little musical problems. This often comes in the form of knowing what you want, and having to work through making it a reality. It's always satisfying to take something that is a challenge, and create something to be proud of.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: "Can you record guitar in the style of ______?" Answer: "Yes, I'd love to. When can I get started?"
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Perhaps people misjudge the amount of thoughtful work really goes into making a great project.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What are you needing musically for your project. What file types would you like me to return your recordings in. What "mood" are you going for with this song?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Make sure you feel comfortable communicating with the person you are working with.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My acoustic guitar, laptop, Apollo Twin, Sm58, and a coffee pot.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I am a professional guitarist for live events and recording projects. I've been in this work full time for 5 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Groovy, dynamic, & musical.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Snarky Puppy, because they seem very free in the way they create music.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Get the right tone you from the beginning by placing the microphone in the best possible spot.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: It varies heavily, but I would have to say Pop, Rock and Jazz.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I am most confident in playing and recording acoustic guitar of many styles.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I will perform the song in the most tasteful way possible, and do my best to match the feeling and sound that is needed for each different project.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I first am sure that I clearly understand what is needed for each given project. Then after setting up audio, I go through the song, which has now been uploaded in Apple Logic, and record my guitar on a separate track.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: For acoustic, I use a Rode NT-1A microphone into my Universal Audio Apollo Twin preamp & interface. The sound from the apollo is so great that I like to keep the signal very pure and unaffected, unless the person I'm working with wants something different. For electric, I have a collection of great Amps, as well as great software from Positive Grid.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Blake Mills, who recently produced "Sound & Color" by Alabama Shakes is constantly inspiring me with his thoughtful playing and production. He never seems to settle for what is easy, but instead brings out what is best in a given song.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I most often record steel string acoustic guitar, because I am best known for my finger-style playing. I also often record electric guitar in many genres such as rock, blues, funk and even country. In addition to Steel String and Electric, I also have recorded ukulele, banjo, mandolin, bass guitar and many other instruments for my clients.
