Interview with Rhys Fletcher Music

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I'm especially proud of a song I co-wrote with friends before leaving Thailand, which went on to reach No.1 on the Billboard charts in China. Another song we wrote was also included on the same album, which went on to top charts in over twelve countries and won awards. I contributed as a songwriter and helped develop the initial demos before the artist took them to her producers in Taiwan.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm currently working on mixing for an artist who has self produced their EP, as well as two on going year-long projects with Artists, producing, writing, mixing and mastering.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I know Rory Hope is an incredible vocalist and songwriter on here and gets a lot of great reviews. I also know another vocalist and songwriter called George Dewhurst who is also super talented.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I love using hardware and vintage equipment - like the SSL E Series I worked with in Thailand - because it can add depth and unique sonic character. That said, I’ve made the majority of my mixes and productions with software and have been more than happy with the results. Magic can be made in or out of the box; it’s the personal touch that truly makes the difference.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to treat every track as my own—bringing energy, care, and creativity to help your music reach its full potential.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: My favourite part of the job is the 'we’ve got one' moment - when everything clicks, creativity flows, and the collaboration is electric. Those are the moments where a track truly comes to life.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Most often, I’m asked about my time in Thailand and how I ended up there. I was in the right place at the right time, but I had to earn it—straight out of university, with little experience, I spent months working long hours on Pro Tools, making music every day. I made lifelong friends along the way, and that intense experience under pressure helped shape me into the songwriter and producer I am today.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: A common misconception is that I just record, mix or edit tracks. In reality, I help bring songs to life - guiding arrangements, producing, shaping performances, and polishing the final production - drawing on years of experience across genres and artists to make each track reach its full potential.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I usually ask about the client’s vision for the track, references or inspirations, the current state of the project, their goals for the final sound, and any specific deadlines or requirements. I also like to understand their workflow preferences so we can collaborate smoothly.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be open about what you want and provide any demos or ideas you have. The more I understand your vision, the better I can bring it to life, whether it’s production, mixing, or vocals.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Macbook Apollo Twin Microphone Guitar Keyboard

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I graduated from Music University in 2015 and immediately began working in a professional recording environment in Thailand. I spent four years at a resort studio there and have been making music full-time in the UK ever since

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style blends big, polished sounds with organic, natural elements for records that feel both powerful and alive

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Jon Bellion because of his infectious energy, his impressive pace of work, and his skill in crafting unique, memorable music

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Always make sure that there's a chorus.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work in the Pop, Rock and Singer-Songwriter genres, but I am always open to working in any style. More recently I've worked on a lot more Hip-Hop and RnB which has been so inspiring.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is working with vocals - whether recording and bringing out the best in a vocalist, editing and tuning for timing and pitch, or crafting vocal arrangements and backing vocals. I focus on making the vocals larger-than-life and perfectly suited to the sonic world of the production.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring experience, creativity, and massive attention to detail - guiding a song from its initial idea to a finished, polished track that truly connects with listeners.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: My production process—whether working together in the studio or remotely - often begins by listening to an idea in its rawest form: a voice note, a rough demo, or a live performance (which I always try to capture). From there, I find the right tempo and key, and start shaping a sonic world for the track -drawing on reference songs, experimenting with samples, or improvising ideas by humming and jamming. Once the song has a structure, we record live instruments and vocals, layering production elements to bring it together before moving into mixing. This is just one element of my workflow, which I adapt depending on the project and the artist’s vision.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a modest studio setup in London, as well as a fully equipped home studio, giving me access to a wide range of tools. I work in Pro Tools with a wealth of plugins, and can also access hardware as needed. Additionally, I have strong contacts with larger studios to accommodate any project requirements

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’ve always been inspired by legendary rock producers and engineers like Chris Lord-Alge, known for creating such massive, impactful sounds - the music I grew up on. Since becoming a professional, I’ve had the privilege of working with incredible artists, producers, and engineers across diverse cultures and genres. This journey introduced me to the work of Hans Zimmer (I had the pleasure of helping engineer The Classics album) and my mentor Chris Craker, producer of the Interstellar soundtrack. Over time, I’ve become a musical chameleon, finding inspiration in anyone who can create magic in the studio

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I work on songs from the ground up - starting with the initial demo and writing process all the way through to the finished mix and master. I also specialize in mixing fully produced tracks, audio editing, and refining demos to make them release-ready for DIY artists and producers
