Interview with Miles DeFranco (5K)
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: So far I think my favorite Project I've released is an EP called "Contentions". I got a lot of great feed back and started to see my audience begin to grow. It was nice to see how much I had improved from my last release just a year prior.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Mostly solo stuff but a few small collaborations in the works as well. I have a lot of time on my hands.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both but for different reasons. Analog and Digital Audio are both very useful depending on the situation. There are certain things you can only do with Analog and other you can only do with Digital. With that being said... digital does make things a lot easier sometimes.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Quality Music, and Clear Communication
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love making music. I always have, and I'm going to be doing it for a long time.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: "You got any beats for me?" (Yes) " Can you lay down vocals for this track I've been working on?" (Yes)
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I don't only make beats for myself. Although I can sing and write lyrics my ambition was always to be a Music Producer.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Apart from a due date, I will ask for a "General Vibe" or some reference songs or artists for material to draw inspiration from. I usually ask if there is a preferred key that they want the song to be written in as well.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice is to hire me! I'm very experienced for my age, and I have a background in music theory. Not only that but I'm not well known yet so my prices are cheap for good quality work.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Computer, Interface, Microphone, Headphones, Monitors
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: This is my Career Path! I have wanted to make music since I was a kid I just didn't know how. I've been producing in FL Studio since 2016 and I've been singing and playing music as long as I can remember.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Beach boy goes to music school.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: SZA, Frank Ocean, Smino, and PlayBoy Cardi... because I have a finished beat that would be perfect.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I can share two! 1) FX like EQ, Reverb, Delay, and Chorus can help a vocal mix to fit into your track seamlessly. 2) LEARN HOW TO SIDE CHAIN!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I'm always open to trying new things however historically I have worked in these Genre. Hip -Hop Pop EDM Ballad RnB
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I have a unique imagination.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I can bring a lot to a song. I've been making music my entire life and I think I have a unique style. I study music theory and composition in college, but I have been performing and writing my own songs since I was a kid.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to get right into things. Typically I will put in a good amount of work and then check with the client to see if the project is headed in a direction they are happy with. I like to wait for a response just so I don't waste both of our time finishing something that you end up unhappy with. I like to try new things but i'm also very good at following directions, the trick is finding a happy medium.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use a Microsoft Surface Studio Pro Desktop, Arturia KeyLab49 Essential Keyboard, Scarlett 2i2 Interface, Alesis Studio Monitors, An AKG P120 Microphone, A Bravo Audi Vacuum Tube Headphone Pre-Amp, and BeyerDynamic DT770 M Headphones. I primarily work in FL Studio Producer Edition with a few extra VST's such as Analog Lab, Kontakt, and Lie.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Production wise I'm inspired by modern producers like Pharell, Nick Mira, and Weezy. Not to mention some of the older guys like George Martin and Bob Ezrin. Artist Wise i'm all over the place... so here are a few. Trippie Redd, Frank Ocean, Smino, Young Thung SZA, Jessie Reyez, Tierra Whack, Doja Cat Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Police, Sublime Louis the Child, Flume, Medasin, Joji
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most clients I've worked with were either looking for an original Beat/Instrumental and/or original lyrics and mixed vocals.
