Interview with Ethical Music Studios
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Balance of both worlds.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Satisfaction from having high quality results.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Working with exciting people that make groundbreaking music.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I think the biggest problem in the music production industry is that people are not correctly informed on what exactly is mixing and mastering. It's very unlikely to turn a turd into gold. Well, we can polish it at least.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: The most important thing I want to know is how serious they are with their music.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: For mastering, please have a correctly exported mix, with the right audio levels and make sure that nothing is clipping
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: UAD Apollo Twin, Neumann U87, Fender Stratocaster, Martin Acoustic, Macbook Pro '13
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: The studio is running professionally for the last 8 years. Before that, I was working in a couple of other studios and big production television companies.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Pretty methodical and straight forward while mastering, but never afraid to use strange things and techniques when producing and mixing.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Also a collaboration with Finneas, Charlie Puth & Rick Rubin.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less is more! Be aware of what you are doing with your tools.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: These days we mostly master pop and hip hop records, although we don't confine ourselves into a specific genre for mastering.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Mastering is something that we are unrivalled in the music industry.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Experience, artistic perspective & dexterity.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Setting up the session, clearing up the tracks for any mistakes, using a reference track and then starting the process either mastering or mixing, using outboard analog gear and plugins.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Special project studio, operating in London, UK & with a subsidiary in Athens, Greece for the summer. Top of the line gear from companies like UAD, SSL, Waves, Neumann, Adam Audio, Manley, Fender, etc.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Bob Katz, Warren Huart, Bob Ludwig, Chris Lord-Alge
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Specialising in Audio Mastering, having worked extensively for over a decade, our expertise have ranked us among the best in the industry.
