Joe Bateman - multi-instrument on SoundBetter

I am a multi-instrumentalist, singer and producer. I have created dozens of songs for producers, musicians and DJs around the world and can help you write lyrics, sing, with the instrumentation and the production of your song.

I am from Bradford, England and play lots of instruments and love writing songs. If you like the music of Ed Sheeran, John Mayer and Sara Bareilles, my sound is for you. Through ups and downs, radio play on local BBC stations, a scholarship at music college in LA and a whirlwind of traveling, I have arrived at a place in my life where I realise there is no greater pleasure than the gift of music.

Predominantly a singer and songwriter, I write songs about love, hope, hopelessness and the ultimate adventure that is life. People have likened my guitar playing to that of John Mayer and Jimi Hendrix (probably too great a compliment I know!) with a unique set of vocals. I also play the drums, violin, piano/keys, mandolin and bass guitar.

Interview with Joe Bateman - multi-instrument

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I am proud of a short personal project I worked on in the summer. It was a two day project where I wrote the song, recorded it, mixed and produced it, for both audio and video:

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am working on multiple projects for other clients and an upcoming EP of my own songs

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Digital. It's the world in which we live

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I promise I will do the very best I can, giving you 110% and believe you will be very happy with the results

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I get to be creative. I can't do normal jobs!

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: They ask me if I can certain way to which I honestly will reply that I will give it a shot but that you are buying my voice - not somebody else's

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: I look younger than I am

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: I ask varied questions - project dependant

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Don't settle for someone who is not exactly what your song needs

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: A good book, a guitar, a toothbrush, a lighter, a raincoat

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I have playing the guitar since ten and picked up other instruments as I've been going along. I have worked as a solo artist the most amount of time though one of my most recent projects was as part of an 80s cover band. I currently make my income through sessional lyric/songwriting and singing for other people's tracks

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: I vary in my own personal tastes. I would describe myself as a singer-songwriter and multi instrumentalist. My style is pop acoustic with elements or rnb and sometimes even blues

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: I would like to work with John Mayer because his style of playing and genre of music is some of my favourite to play along to. I have a lot of admiration for his work

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Never release your music until it is ready. Don't wait too long until you think it is ready or it never will be

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I generally work on pop and rub tracks but am comfortable with a wide rage of genres

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: My strongest skill is my ability to adapt and create quickly while remaining focused on attention to detail

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I believe I bring a strong amount of creative flare and attempt to add catchy and gripping vocal melodies. As a lyricist I attempt to keep the listener captivated in the theme or story and as a singer I intend to impress

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: Typically I will repeatedly listen to the track the client sends me so I can absorb the feeling and direction of the song. After correspondence with the client (to ensure I know what is required) I will systematically record sections of the vocal track according to the scratch vocals - unless otherwise indicated by the client

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I record in a professional home studio through a high end SE Electronics Condenser microphone. This runs through and M-Audio interface with excellent preamps and into a Mac running Logic X

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: I am inspired by many great singers of different genres and while having a great amount of admiration for their music and voices attempt to create something that fresh and original

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Most commonly I sing the lead vocal and a background harmony for my clients. Typically I will receive a scratch vocal recording they have made for a point of reference and we take it from there. Sometimes I am privileged to write lyrics for the song which I find a lot of fun
