Interview with Silja Rós

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The lyrics for the album "Afflicted" which I wrote with Magnus Dagsson on his debut album. The single "More of you" which I wrote over a beat from Future Lion which was my first time writing for others. And of course my debut album is always very close to my heart since it includes songs that were written by me the last 10 years which I had been playing live for many years before I finally released them.

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: My guitar, my piano, big notebook and pencils.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I'm both trained as a classical singer ( Reykjavík Academy of Singing and Vocal Arts) 6th Grade ABRMS & FÍH Music Academy (Jazz Vocals) . I've been performing my music for the last 10 years, both been in a band and then been releasing my solo-project under the name Silja Rós. I started performing my music live for couple of years. In 2017 I released my debut album "Silence" and since then I've been performing my music and working as a songwriter. I'm currently working on my second album "Stay Still" which will be released Spring 2020. I've been performing as a singer in musicals since I was 13 years old.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: I love trying new styles. My first album was folk/ singer-songwriter/indie-pop. I'm currently working on an RnB album which will be released in 2020.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: Damien Rice, Norah Jones, Vulfpeck, Theo Katzman & Billie Eilish. Damien Rice & Norah Jones are my all time favorite artist. They have inspired me from day one of my songwriting journey. They both perform their music with great emotional life. Vulfpeck and Theo Katzman have been my greatest inspiration for the last 2 years. They somehow manage to write songs that have such beautiful melodies, full of soul but at the same time are funky. Billie Eilish is just amazing, I've gotten inspiration from her along with some Icelandic RnB artists with my second album which is in the making.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: My solo project: Folk, indie-pop, R&B, pop & singer-songwriter. Other projects: Jazz, soul, funk,EDM. Recently I've been writing a lot of melodies/lyrics + recorded vocals for EDM.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: Unique voice, trained in various styles & songwriting.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: My Unique Voice. Great lyrics and beautiful melodies that fit the song. To hear the emotions of the singing are very important to me! I always make sure to have the right emotions in the recordings to make sure people feel the story of the lyrics.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: Songwriting 1. Get Beat/Song 2. Write Melody/Lyrics Draft 1 3. Record a Demo 4. After receiving notes, I make changes if needed. Record Demo 2 if needed. 5. Record the Vocals Professionally 6. Send the vocals. I send you at least 3-5 takes + harmonies if needed. You can then decide weather you use a whole take or do your own composite. Singing: 1. Record the vocals, as many takes as you prefer. 2. Send the files

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: Equipment I use in the studio: Warm Audio wa-87 Microphone with Pop filter Aston Halo Reflection Filter (Vocal Booth) Universal Audio Apollo Twin Audio Interface

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: Songwriting: I write melody and/or lyrics to your beat/song. Vocals: If I wrote the melody/lyrics and you also want me to sing it I'll record the vocals. If you need a singer for a demo or a song you've already written I also record vocals for that. I've also featured on couple of songs.

  23. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  24. A: My second album. I've also been working on songs for DarwinxMaincoon. I'm participating in a Writing Camp in Copenhagen in December.

  26. A: Everything. Performing, writing meaningful lyrics and recording the vocals with emotions.
