Ivan Popov on SoundBetter

I will make your recordings sound really good - whether it's acoustic, heavy metal, EDM or anything in between. Due to my advanced physics education, I have a solid understanding of not only how plugins sound but also how to use them in a creative and powerful way. It's not only about a good mix - it's about details that make the mix amazing.

Self-taught audio engineer with a background in Physics. 6 years of experience working with local Toronto artists as well as mixing sound for video games and movies. I provide fast, good sounding mixes and masters, regardless of the genre. While I don't have any big credits, I have yet to meet someone who wasn't happy with my work. I offer a full suite of mixing and mastering done in the box, with primary specializations on Pop/Metal and Soundtrack music.

Ivan is extremely professional and very efficient. He cares about your time frame and will do everything he can to meet the deadline set. Not only that, but he is proficient in his skills and very communicative, so that he mixes your song exactly how you want it to sound. Quick turnover does not mean sloppy work in his case, as he is speedy but diligent. Would definitely recommend!

Interview with Ivan Popov

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: A project called tangerine beams, a combination of synth-pop, funk and disco. Funky times!

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Digital, it allows you to streamline your process and provides less hassle overall.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: You will be amazed by the final product. In a good way.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I graduated from university, studying math and physics for 4 years, after that, I started to teach myself the magic of professional audio. I have been doing it for 6 years and don't intend to stop!

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: Clean and powerful. I don't mind adding a bit of dirt, but if its blasts you in the face or conveys the right emotion - it's done right.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: An hour spent on automation is an hour well spent. It's there for a reason!

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: I usually work on a medley of genres - Indie-pop, Metal, Electronic, Acoustic and EDM.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: My strongest skill is mixing - I love a good mix! If I ain't bopping to your song by the time I'm done, I do it again. That doesn't happen very often though.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: I focus a lot of energy on making the song alive - be it by using automation, my own techniques that I developed over the years and clever usage of LFO's.

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: I'm inspired by bands like Prodigy, Pendulum, 65daysofstatic - any that offer fresh, original and high-quality sound.

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: I mix and master their tracks, focusing on humanization and automation as I believe that static mix is a dead mix.
