Interview with Maxi E Silva

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: I started playing and taking drum lessons when I was 10 years old. Then 4 years later I started producing music in early 2014 as a result of curiosity. At that time I started to listen to EDM and mainly Skrillex. I just wanted to know how those amazing sounds were done. So I started to learn on my own with YouTube tutorials and all that stuff. Then I started to collaborate with different producers and artists. Later I started to take it as a full time thing until today. Passed over 500k plays on some songs on Spotify. I am part of the Music Licensing Catalog Artlist.io under my alias "Macifif" My music got used by several brands around the world such as Emirates.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: I worked on a song called "Welcome To The Afterlife" I was the Producer, Mixing and Mastering Engineer of the song and I'm so happy with it because it really captured the emotion and Cinematic-Electronic sound I wanted to achieve. The vocals also fit perfectly with the song and it was really fun to mix them. It passed over 60k streams on Spotify and it was used by several brands all over the world. You can find it under "Macifif - Welcome To The Afterlife"

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: I'm working on music for other artists and companies. And also working for my own personal music project.

  7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: If you're looking for a Female Singer that specializes in Emotional and Cinematic vocals, she's the way to go. Her name is Eden Rayne. I highly recommend her.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: I prefer digital, just beacause it's easier to use and cheaper (mostly), and you can get the same results than with analog tools in many cases. But anyways I love analog too.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: My promise is to take what you have in mind and turn it into reality, taking care of each part of the process. Resulting in a curated piece full of emotional and cinematic sounds.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: What I like the most is conecting with the artists I work with on a personal level. I think that is key for achieving results and getting incredible stuff done.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Context is key. Let me explain: you can have the best melody of the world, but if it lacks the right context (chords, ambience, synths, sound design, mixing, effects, textures) it will probably suck. So, if you have the right melody AND the right context, you will make something amazing, I promise.

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: I think the biggest misconception is thinking that a Music Producer can take a trash song and make it sound like a Grammy Winner song. That's just not the truth. Cause if you want to get amazing results, you have to start by having a good product (music) in the first place. Of course a Music Producer can help (and a lot) to achieve that sound you want, but it's not realistic to expect an amazing result if you haven't worked on developing your music-singing-storytelling skills yet :)

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: I use to ask these questions frequently: - What's your backstory in music? - Who is your main inspiration? - What is your goal with this project long term? - Have you ever worked with a Music Producer before? How did it go? And the most important one: - What do you mean?

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: If you're taking your career seriously, don't look for the cheaper option, look for the option that fits your sound and objetives long term. You will save yourself a lot of trouble.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: Notebook and Headphones

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: An hybrid of Cinematic-Electronic music with and emotional emphasis.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would really like to work with Christian Cole. He is and indie artist that produces electronic-pop music with a very cinematic and emotional vibe. That is a kind of music that I just love. I think we could make something incredible together.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I work on Cinematic music and Electronic music. Often a combination of these two aswell. Also some Alt Pop here and there.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: My strongest skill is really understaning the vision of the artist I'm working with and taking that idea to its realization. I have developed this skill throughout the years.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I bring an emotional feeling and uniqueness as a result of combining Electronic and Cinematic elements

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: Everything starts with a conversation with the artist/producer/company. We hop on a call and talk about the project, what the client wants to achieve and how I can take them to that goal. Once we have everything ready, we start to work on a first draft, and after some feedback received from the client and a couple calls, I proceed to finish the Mixing and Mastering until I deliver the complete work.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: A Notebook, Audio Technica M50X, AKG K44, Behringer MS20, M-Audio M-Track II.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Enya, Christian Cole, Vancouver Sleep Clinic, Being As An Ocean, Hans Zimmer, Illenium, EDEN, Porter Robinson, Hillsong United, and many more. As you can see, there is variety of genres that inspires me a lot, but one thing is what inspires me the most: emotional music and cinematic sounds.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Music Production is what I do the most, also Mixing and Mastering of tracks that my clients already have produced. Also vocal mixing and tuning sometimes.
