Interview with Vera Medina
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I am especially proud of is an album I produced for a rising pop artist. I was involved in every aspect of the production, from composing and arranging to recording, mixing, and mastering. The album received critical acclaim and resonated deeply with listeners, which was incredibly fulfilling.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the moment, I am working on several projects, including producing a new electronic music album and collaborating with other artists on various tracks. I am also mentoring students and providing guidance on the music industry.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I use a combination of both analog and digital tools. Analog equipment provides a warm, authentic sound, while digital tools offer flexibility and precision. Together, they allow me to achieve the best possible results.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to my clients is to deliver high-quality music that meets their vision and exceeds their expectations. I am committed to providing a professional and collaborative experience throughout the production process.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I like most about my job is the ability to create and shape music. It's incredibly rewarding to take an idea from concept to completion and see how it resonates with listeners.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Customers often ask about my production process and how long it will take to complete a project. I explain my process in detail and provide a realistic timeline based on the project's scope and complexity.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception about music production is that it's purely technical. While technical skills are important, creativity and artistic vision play a crucial role in producing a great track.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually ask prospective clients about their musical influences, the sound they envision for their project, their goals, and any specific ideas or themes they want to explore. Understanding these aspects helps me tailor my approach to their needs.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: When looking to hire a music producer, it's important to find someone who understands your vision and has the technical skills to bring it to life. Communication is key, so choose a provider who is open to your ideas and feedback.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If I were on a desert island, I would take my laptop with a DAW installed, a MIDI keyboard, a high-quality microphone, headphones, and a portable audio interface. These essentials would allow me to continue creating music even in isolation.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started my career as a musician, playing the piano and guitar. Over time, I expanded into composing and producing music. My passion for technology led me to explore electronic music production, and I have been actively working in the music industry for the last 2 to 3 decades.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is a fusion of traditional Brazilian elements with modern electronic sounds. I strive to create music that is both innovative and deeply rooted in cultural heritage.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: One important music production tip is to always trust your ears. While it's essential to understand the technical aspects of production, the most important tool you have is your ability to listen critically and make adjustments based on what you hear.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on electronic music and Brazilian popular music (MPB), but I am versatile and open to exploring other genres as well.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is my ability to combine my technical expertise with my creative instincts. This allows me to produce high-quality music that is both technically sound and artistically compelling.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a deep understanding of both electronic music and MPB, blending traditional Brazilian sounds with modern production techniques. My experience as a composer, producer, and musician allows me to add unique elements to a song, whether it's a captivating melody, a rich arrangement, or a polished final mix.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical work process begins with a thorough discussion with the client to understand their vision and goals for the project. This is followed by composing and arranging the music, recording the necessary tracks, and then moving on to mixing and mastering. Throughout the process, I maintain open communication with the client to ensure their feedback is incorporated at every stage.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: am inspired by a wide range of musicians and producers. Some of my biggest influences include Quincy Jones for his incredible production skills, Tom Jobim for his contributions to MPB, and modern electronic producers like Flume and Deadmau5 for their innovative use of technology.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have two studios: one focused on recording, mixing, and mastering, and another dedicated to production. My recording studio is equipped with high-quality microphones, preamps, and monitors to ensure pristine sound capture and accurate mixing. The production studio features a range of DAWs, synthesizers, and plugins, along with instruments like the piano and guitar, providing a versatile environment for creating music.
