Interview with Kristo Kassin | KSN Audio
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: It sound lame but I'm proud of myself for putting my own KSNX artist name, music out there for anybody to listen instead of creating it directly into a drawer to be forgotten. I'm also proud to offer my services to those in need of help - i acknowledge there are many fantastic professionals out there and i hope to become one for somebody with my work as proof.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Endlessly creating my own new tunes for anybody to enjoy.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Unfortunately not yet, but i would definitely recommend anyone who's work i trust.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. While analog was the granddaddy of many things, times change and more interesting and potential solutions come in digital form.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to always do my best with any job i take, regardless of the amount paid. I can't keep myself calm and content unless i know my potential customer has received my best effort or possible outcome.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love music and everything it encompases. Especially its power to mute the outside world 'noise'. I love to lose track of time and focus on the experience of creating something new from nothing. I also get great pleasure when i can share this emotion by sharing music or helping somebody achieve their musical potential.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Just starting out - no SoundBetter FAQ yet. But i will update once i get questions. Anyone looking to see a FAQ about my personal 'artist project / career' can see it here - https://kristokassin.wixsite.com/ksnxmusic/faq
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: It often comes as a surprise that not-so-mainstream music producers don't swim in swarms of money and fame.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I would definitely like to understand what is exactly expected of my work. Any guidance of personal preference is greatly appreciated and will help me achieve positive results in the end.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Try to define your needs as acurate as possible and give me some time to focus on your project - i don't well under time pressure.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Well... assuming i have electricity - my PC, monitor, KB, mouse, headphones.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been making music since 2006. I have recently found myself to be confident enough to offer mixing and mastering services to others in need.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Very space'ish and ambient inspired, even with more straightforward sounding styles like dnb or dubstep for example.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Any artist really where i could learn something new or even teach other about any solutions.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I've noticed i tend to over-do my productions and they eventually get messy, so definitely less is more when it comes to enjoyable production. Quality over quantity.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Electronic / Instrumentals - progressive, house, drum and bass, dubstep, techno
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Instrumentals - matching different sounds together in a mix so that they don't fight each other for a space to thrive in.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Usually, i try to find interesting sounds which sit well together and seem to have a purpose in the mix. I really like to space it out with reverb. Emotionally my tracks tend to be "stuck in time" and any variations are sometimes hard to spot, but they are there ;)
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: As a producer, i start to sketch out any sound compilations until i feel i have tapped onto something special. From there i will try to develop it further. As a mixer, i use more data/plugin assitance in balacing the tones and any harsh tones. I try to make it perfect for a mastering engineer to continue. When doing mastering on my own, i try not to over-do with the limiting so that the song doesn't lose its character and doesn't start to sound bad. I try to keep it compressed enough but also saving harmonics in order to make it sound authentic on any speaker. I also take into account where the track is supposed to land - CD? Spotify? Radio? - it all matters.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a humble homey setup consisting of PreSonus Eris 5 XT monitors speakers, Sennheiser HD 380 Pro studio headphones and a beast of a personal computer.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Approacing Black, Jay FM, Naden, The Midnight, Sellorekt/LADreams, WRLD, Kromestar, GLXY, Malaky, Alix Perez, Icicle, Pola & Bryson - just to name a few of my many favorites :)
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Just starting out, but i'm hoping to help clients with any mixing / mastering / production or even audio restoration work.
