Interview with Massimo Pellegrini
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The best is yet to come, since I am working with Elton John's legendary and Grammy Awards winning arranger, Mr Paul Buckmaster... But first..... I have been called by Giuliana Danzè, a young yet known female italian singer, who performed live also on TF1 in France, along with duets with International stars as Dionne Warwick, and she told me she heard a demo of a song I wrote, upon lyrics by Luca Viviani, Giorni Pesanti. She wanted to sing it and we worked togegher with a renowned italian producer in Milan to adapt the song to her voice. Then, as hommage to my musical heroes, the song was mastered at Abbey Road in London... the song and video were aired and broadcast almost all the world round for 7 months.. not bad! .
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Well, I think I bring good melodies with good upbeat and harmonic grooves.. I try to make good pop rock songs suitable for every listener, but a personal mark trying to break clichees.... but I prefer to let the audience express...
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Actually there are lots of great artists to work with...simply choose the one that is best for you.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Yes, WORK! and be the first to be critical to yourselves!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I've finished two songs for a promising italian young male singer, named IMA. Both songs are arranged by Paul Buckmaster, which is also credited as co-composer.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog for acustic response, digital for... freedom!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: It is written above: Give you good stuff!!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Music!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: What's your style? No style, it depends by what YOU want...
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I do not have misconception. If I am not satisfied of a song or a music, I simply cancel it and start over again...
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Why don't you ask ME questions, instead? Is it YOU hiring me...
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Just have clear in mind your project, that's all! this could be a challenge for a young emerging singer, band or lyricist and I can be helpful in speeding up projects.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: grand piano and lots of papers.. pencils, sharpener and rubber..
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Omnicomprehensive personal rock-pop writing style... I mean.. I don't care about style! Just write good stuff for yourssake (My arranger's words..)
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: oopss.. I actually work with one of my youth miths!!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock Pop songs mainly and contamporary-classical music, both for ensembles or single instruments..
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Music writing, capturing melodic lines and (if required) unconventional harmonic progressions..
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: There is no typical work process... it depends by the project.. generally speaking, about songs, I write music upon lyrics. Which comes out almost completed and working 100%. the sample song I have in my page was written in one single stroke, from top to the bottom.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is quite simple: A digital Piano, and sheet of music paper first! Then comes the softwares: Protools, Nuendo and Digital Performer.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Well... actually I have lots of musician who inspired me.. or better, they are guitly of my becoming a musician... so how can I name one out of billions? I was introduced to music in my infant age, I listended to everything, from Classical music, to Contemporary music.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Speaking about songs, I compose music UPON lyrics. You send me your lyrics and, if I think I can come up with a good song, I will proceed to next step.
