Interview with Tina Miller

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I worked with producer Eren Cannata signed to Warner Chappell Records. We worked on a collaborative project titled "Strangers In My Bed." I sang toplines, harmonies, and adlibs. It was such a fun and unique experience. Plus, it was awesome to be able to work with someone in such a profound position in the music industry!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am currently working on Blue Lush's pop-rock record with producer Dave Caggiano. He has worked on several Blackheart Records releases (Joan Jett's own record label)!

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Unfortunately not!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital because it is easier and more efficient.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to help uphold and maintain their artistry. I aim to make their creative visions come to fruition.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love satisfying other artists' visions and collaborating to create an awesome product.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: "Who are your vocal influences?" - I would say that the soulfulness of my vocals compare to Adele, Alanis Morissette, and other alto voices.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: I feel that it's easy for producers to get lost in their own routine. Some of them don't realize how inspiring their work is. I feel so inspired when vibing on beats or demos. Producers should give themselves more credit about how amazing their work appears to us vocalists.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I ask my clients a series of questions that stay true to the vision of their work. If I'm being hired for a project, I want to make sure that the artist maintains control of their idea. I will merely help to facilitate their vision.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: If you are looking for someone that doesn't settle for anything less than the best, then I'm your vocalist!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: I would take my my Shure SM7B, Focusrite Interface, Logic Pro X, computer, and some sort of portable power source?

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I teach voice and beginner piano lessons to children with disabilities. I also independently manage my band's artist project.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I feel that my voice performs best in the alto range. It is very soulful.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Caroline Polachek. She is an extremely powerful female producer, vocalist, and visionary. Her artistry and musicianship inspires me to push myself to new limits.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: When recording, it's always important to have a muse in mind.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I typically work on pop and EDM tracks, even some R&B too.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is my ability to adapt to particular styles. I am naturally a mezzo, and I have a five octave range. I can riff, sing softly, or sing more legato, slow, and sultry.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: My vocals have been described as rich and textural. I capture a unique tone and a bit warmer than most. My natural vocals are soulful, relaxed, and powerful - with a little bit looser diction. Of course this can be adjusted depending on the style!

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Depending on the genre or style of the track, I always begin by coming up with a format for the song. For pop and EDM, I always establish the formula first: two verses, pre-choruses, chorus, bridge, and back to the chorus. From there, I begin by vocally improvising on a melody in each section. From there, I add lyrics. Then comes harmonies and adlibs.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a Focusrite interface, a Shure SM7B mic, and Logic Pro X for all of my recording. I can send dry stems or mixed stems.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: People that are able to earn a full-time living off of being a session musician. That takes such hard work to independently build up a clientele.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I typically add toplines for pop and EDM producers.
