Interview with Sebastian Sendon
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am working with an Australian Artist, he is a one man project by the moment but it will be a band soon, called Star Eternal, he send me his demo songs and I produce the songs, record the bass, re-write drums with Superior Drummer, and make whatever the song needs to sound great, then I mix the song. Also working with local bands and for Nolly from Periphery setting up his mixes sessions in Logic so he can sit and mix with everything organized, just a little help.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I play guitar since I was a child, I always was learning new things, writing drums, how to play bass, drums, etc, always autodidact and one day I needed to mix my music, because I didn´t have money to spend in a studio, so I start mixing my own music, and producing, start reading books, and watching a lot of "Creative Live" sessions. After mixing a lot of my songs, when I felt that my mixes where sounding good enough, I uploaded my music on the web and some local bands asked me to produce their work, so here I am, producing bands since 2013. I also had worked like an assistant for some great engineers like Adam "Nolly" Getgood from Periphery.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: In my band, Inner Xpose, I am the main composer, guitarist, producer, mixer and mastering Engineer. I am proud because It was the most complete work for me like musician, producer and engineer.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I always do my best to help the artist achieve their goals..
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Taylor Larson, Joe Barresi, Terry Date, Nolly Getgood, Joey Sturgis and many more..
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Normally I will start with a pre-production, get all the details and arrangements done, then recording process, then editing, then mixing, and when I have the mix ready, I start adding layers, some more arrangements, etc (if the bands ask for it).
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: So melodic, with contrast, perfectionist ...
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Producing, mixing, mastering and Guitar/Bass performance.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Macbook pro, my guitar and a mic.. haha
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I Think I can add my "touch" haha, like a composer, and listener position, I like that people remember the song, give something to the song that people can remember and keep sounding in their heads.. sometimes the song is great, so I don´t add anything, I just mix the song until this sound great to me for the particular style..
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a simple set up, medium room treated properly to hear every detail, It´s really a control room where I can edit, mix, record guitars, bass, vocals, I don´t have a drum room, if the band want record acoustic drums I will rent a studio for that purpose. I work with a lot of digital plugins, Slate digital plugins is my power tool.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both, I like analog because the non-linearities and 0 latency while tracking, but I also like digital because I can load a session in any place with my Daw an keep everything in place and sounding the same, So thats why I use analog simulation plugins like Slate Digital in all my mixes.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Being creative, learning from other artists..
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Can you play to the metronome? ..
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Metal, all kinds, modern metal mostly.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Production, mixing and mastering works including drum programming, editing & recording if is a local band.
