Interview with Thiago Baggio

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Both. I do mix 100% ITB or even hybrid with my summing mixer, however all my recordings are done with analog gear with all the necessary processing to make them sound like a record from the get go.

  3. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  4. A: Recording: Joe Chicarelli, Tchad Blake and Al Schimit. Mixing: Michael Brauer, Peter Katis and Tchad Blake just to name a few.

  5. Q: What's your typical work process?

  6. A: 1) After I received the files according to my specs, you and I will have a talk for me to understand all the concept and the artistic paths desired in the mix. 2) A first mix based on the concepts and ideas provided will be done and sent out to you. 3) If any, all necessary changes will be made and a new bounce will be sent. You can do this twice. 4) If you still think some adjustments or changes are necessary, we will make a last recall for each desired song.

  7. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  8. A: Minidocs is a project that I worked as the Recording Engineer and I'm really proud of. A different artist with an unique setup everyday. So little time to make it happen and the interaction between audio and video made it very challenging. Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/user/ZoeFilmsMiniDocs

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I'm present in the music industry since 2010. I have courses in Music Technology and Acoustics of the Instruments at the University of São Paulo and courses in Audio Engineering, Music Production and Music Theory at OMID International Academy. I also have participated in over 120 albums by artists such as Hermeto Pascoal, Airto Moreira, Sadao Watanabe, 5 Dry, Tó Brandileone, Oficina G3, Raimundos, Seu Jorge and Emicida, just to name a few. Professionally worked in various prominent companies in the market such as Nacena Studios, OMiD Studios, Ricardo Mosca Studio, Audio Mobile and Audio Portatil. I currently hold the position of Chief Engineer at GargolâIndia Studio, where I had the chance to send several albums to be mixed and mastered in the USA by David Darlington (Sting, Madonna, George goodson, etc.), Recording Engineer at PlayCo Studio, and, am featured in the webserie MINIDOCS, distributed and commercialized in several countries like the USA and Japan. I also perform as a self-employed professional in several productions in different styles with my own company, MixPrep.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: I ask what the deadline is, what influences and references they have, who was involved in the process before I stepped in, what they're looking for, how they found me and why, etc.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: Get your music to sound like a record from the get go.

  15. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  16. A: Maurício Gargel, the mastering engineer that I trust and recommend.

  17. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  18. A: To work hard until they're entirely happy with their work.

  19. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  20. A: Meeting different people who challenge me. I'm always seeking improvement.

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Communicate clearly and never be afraid to tell the person you're hiring what you want until you're convinced and satisfied with the work.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: My headphones, my Ilok and a laptop.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I would describe my style as fearless.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: It depends on what role I'm playing. I do work with a lot of genres.

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: I try to create a mix that brings out the emotion, dynamics, space and intensity of the song. I want my mixes to be more impacting for my client and the audience as possible.

  31. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  32. A: My mixing studio is digitally focused. In other words, I mix totally ITB so I invested a lot of time and money to have the best room and the best gear so that I can have the best listening environment to work at and make your music translate perfectly everywhere.

  33. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  34. A: I usually am hired as a Recording Engineer for my style and also as Mixing Engineer. I leave production and mastering for those who actually know what they are doing. I'm really a team player so I enjoy working in projects with highly skilled professionals doing what they do best so that I can focus on what I'm doing.
