Endorse Simon N.Interview with Simon N.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: The best of both worlds. I love analog gear when recording, and I'm excited about the great opportunities the digital world offers us, especially in post-production.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I deliver clear, great sounding mixes and master within the deadline.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Is there already a Pro Tool session? Is there a rough mix? How will the music be released? What is your goal with the project? Should I do my thing or are there already ideas about how it should sound?
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Mac Book with Pro Tools, Neumann U67, Prism Sound Lyra 2, Adam Audio speakers
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: It all started classically as an assistant during my studies. I had the great opportunity to learn from experienced engineers and producers who worked with big artists like Slash, Rod Stewart, Pink Floyd, Green Day or the Rolling Stones. I visited amazing studios like Abbey Road Studios (UK) or Powerplay Studios (Switzerland) where I was able to gain experience in different areas of the music business, from sound fishing to international radio promotion. Gradually, I started mixing more and more regularly myselfe and pursuing my own projects. I now have 15 years of experience in pop, rock and hip-hop projects, both for major music companies and independent artists. The music I've worked on has been played by radio stations in more than 45 countries. I have mixed and mastered sold-out vinyl records. It gives me great pleasure to be involved with the various projects, to learn, to tinker with the sound and to keep developing.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: There are many great, talented artists that I would love to work with. I'm always happy to collaborate with artists who are passionate about their music.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: A technician can improve the accuracy of the performance, but he cannot fake an attitude that has not been recorded.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I am comfortable with pop, rock and hip-hop music.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Energy, beat, transparency.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I like to record in well-equipped studios or get cleanly recorded tracks. At home I work on an iMac with the plug-ins I need and additional analog outboard equipment. Depending on the project, I decide whether I mix in the box or work on a mixing console.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: There’s a lot of great producers and engineers that highly inspire me like Rick Rubin, Andy Wallace, Chris Lord-Alge, Bernie Grundman.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Tracking, comping, editing, tuning, mixing, mastering.
