I'm Jimbo, better known for producing records as Jaytech. I have been releasing music for 15 years with passion for creating great sounding dance music, and have just completed my third studio album titled "Awakening". I regularly assist producers in getting the best sound out of their tracks, and offer an array of mix, master & production services

James “Jimbo” Cayzer (a.k.a. Jaytech) has fifteen years experience in the audio industry and is known for featuring new electronic artists on his radio show and podcast, Jaytech Music. In addition to regularly screening tracks for the show, he has also honed his craft for assessing and improving new music as a previous label A&R for Anjunabeats / Anjunadeep.

As an artist, Jaytech has been involved in the creation of two US iTunes #1 dance albums (Anjunadeep 02 & 03) and a Beatport Trance #1 in 2014 (Super8 & Tab vs Jaytech - “Code Red”). His artist albums “Everything is OK” and “Multiverse” were released to global critical acclaim.

Twelve months ago he started his own imprint, Positronic Digital, and in 2015 the label released its first mix compilation, Positronic Collective, signing over twenty new electronic artists. To assist some of the newer artists reach the full potential of their sound, Jimbo worked closely with them to create stem mixdowns of their tracks in his carefully calibrated Berlin studio.

Having just completed his third artist album "Awakening", Jimbo’s obsession with sound is entering a new realm of professional polish, and he’s now opening that sound up to the next generation of production talent.

Jaytech was absolutely amazing and such a joy to work with. I had been following his podcast and music for a few years now and was very aware of the quality of his work, so when I found out he was offering mixing and mastering services I flipped. He was incredibly prompt and easy to work with. 10/10 would hire again.

I expected no less than Anjuna quality and that's what I received. Highly recommend. Quick turnaround time as well. Waiting for my track is not something that really existed here as it was such a quick job. I am thoroughly satisfied.

I used Jimbo to master my last track and it came back sounding awesome. Jimbo really knows his stuff and I'd recommend him to anyone looking to polish their music to a professional standard. Along with his production skills, he's also a bloody nice chap.

I've already got my next track over to him for a touch of Jimbo magic.

We've been following Jaytech for some time now and love his music! His tracks are always recognisable for their high production quality so James was the obvious choice to master our track for us. We were very happy with the result and will continue to send our tracks his way for mastering!

James mastered my first experimental sound work. He did a great job; sensitive to the intimacy and acoustic nature of the work; helping the sound extend out and fill just the right space, retaining clarity without overwhelming the listener. Fantastic. I'd recommend him without hesitation.

Jaytech did a full stem mix of my track "The Other Side" off of his new compilation from his label Positronic Digital. I was really impressed by how it came out. It really made the track pop out to its fullest potential. I would definitely recommend his services to anyone looking for a solid mix.

Interview with Jaytech | James Cayzer

Tell us about your studio setup.
I run Adam and Dynaudio monitoring setups side-by-side in a purpose-built "room-in-room" with comprehensive acoustic treatment, tested and tweaked for sonic accuracy. I use Sennheiser, Audio Technica and AKG headphones, mixing is done in Logic.
Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
Whilst living in London I assisted Above & Beyond in going through their extensive catalogue of music and converting the projects into a format that could be performed by the group live on stage for a special show Beirut, Lebanon. I played an opening DJ set to 10,000 people, and then seeing the live show in action was an unforgettable experience.
What do you like most about your job?
It has been shown that people's brains enter a meditative state when producing and mixing, and for me there is a great satisfaction in finding space and balance - something that is reflected in other aspects of life as well.
What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
There are no wrong answers when it comes to requests or desires for approach to your mix - it is your music and your message. A good mix engineer will adapt to their clients' wishes and will happily make any changes required, so do not be afraid to ask.
What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
I began with a classical background in piano, which I have played since the age of six, and released my first vinyl record in 2001, when I was 16. I began studying at the Canberra School of Music in Australia before discontinuing when my electronic career started taking off. After relocating to the UK, I spent three years touring the world with trance stars Above & Beyond and worked as a studio engineer for their Anjunabeats record label in London. Now located in Berlin, I still work with Anjunabeats from time to time and also release music on my own label, Positronic Digital.
How would you describe your style?
Forward-thinking melodic electronic music.
Which artist would you like to work with and why?
Hans Zimmer - one of the great composers of our time, and he has an amazing studio!
Can you share one music production tip?
If you can use as little EQ as possible during the creation process, you'll place more emphasis on choosing the right sounds and fitting things together more organically, allowing for a more natural-sounding mixdown later on.
What type of music do you usually work on?
My main love is electronic music, namely progressive house and trance. I have also worked with acoustic, experimental and pop music, as well as music for advertising.
What's your strongest skill?
I regularly help artists hone in on the best aspects of their sound that might often be overlooked by others, and bring them forward so that they may be better presented to the world.
What do you bring to a song?
Having spent the last decade touring globally, I've been able to experience first-hand how tracks translate between small systems (such as laptops and iPod earbuds) to large festival scenarios with 10,000+ people. My mix approach allows for mastering to be an in-built part of the process, and I now mix and master all my own music.
What's your typical work process?
Clients are requested to send all parts with EQ and compression removed, spatial effects can be left on if desired. My first step is to identify which musical elements shine through the most, and what the artist is aiming to convey with their music and mix. A rough mix from the artist is kept in the project at all times. From there, I build the mix from a point of utmost simplicity, processing any disruptions in the flow of energy as they arise. Once any mix issues are taken care of, I then analyse what aspects of the record can be emphasized to make it really shine. To finish, masters are amplified to industry standards and tested again similar tracks to check things like balance in the frequency spectrum.
What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
I am inspired by Madeon for his relentlessness in squeezing the most energy out of every track, by Morgan Page for his ever-expanding quest for improving studio disciplines, by Imogen heap for her ability to sing, perform, record and produce all her music.
Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
I provide full stereo mixdowns of tracks with option of club and radio-ready mastering.
