Endorse paul smallWas a pleasure working with Paul on a few songs. He has great communication and ideas and really helped my music.
I’ve worked with Paul on my first single. I knew that I needed someone to handle my music with care, precision and feeling. This was exactly what I got working with this amazing musician!
I’m working with Paul for about 4 years.
What I like most about working with Pavel is that he is always open to unusual ideas and can easily find a common language with different artists.
He knows how to reveal the artist's ideas and turn them into really cool music.
I can confidently call him a professional in his field!
I recommend Pavel to everyone as an excellent songwriter and producer.Working with Paul is very easy and a pleasure. He is a Pro. I call him the Music Man.
Acute to one's needs, considerate, and without an ego, he makes finding the best sound for an artist his mission. And in that he succeedes.
Being versatile, a multi-instrumentalist, with a broad taste for music, he can work in any genre, I can attest to that.
You will enjoy working with him, and best of all the result of your collaboration.High quality productions & mix! Paul gives the best advices during the work. Can't wait work with him more!
Interview with paul small
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am finishing soundtrack work on my second full-feature film and at the same time working with several artists.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I do 90% of my work in the box so for me the convenience of the DAW will always beat the perks of using analog.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: We will get an outstanding result if we both stay sincere, courageus and open-minded in our collaboration.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Music is the best and most accessible mood-altering drug. I love seeing how my work can change people's lives.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it's all just technicalities. Actually behind every technical decision there is always an idea, an intention, an emotion.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is your artist identity? What is your mission? What do you want to say? What change in audience's minds are you trying to make? What made you write this song? Do you hear it as an intimate conversation in the dark or are you standing on stage in front of a crowd telling this story? What emotions were filling your heart when you wrote this song?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be curious and be courageous.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: 1. My Taylor GS Mini Acoustic guitar - I love starting songs just with my acoustic. If it sounds good stripped down - it will sound good fully produced. 2. MacBook Pro with Ableton Live - I spent more time with it then with my family 3. Audiotechnica Headphones - compact and reliable 4. Water Bottle - always need to stay hydrated! 5. Akai LPK25 - simple and compact midi controller that served me for years
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been working in music my whole life. I played in bands, sang covers, played wedding gigs. But I always dreamed of making money out of my own art. So I started learning how to produce in Ableton Live on my 10 year old Dell laptop. 6 years later I have a full time career as a music producer and mixing engineer working with artists, brands and filmmakers from all over the world.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Unapologetically sincere and raw emotion meets high-quality modern production and mixing.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I love working with artists who are open for experimentation and are ready to explore new depths in themselves.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: If you want to make something louder - make something quieter before that. If you want to make something wider - make something narrower before that. It's all about contrast.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Usually I work on songs that balance raw emotions with commercial production. Indie-pop, indie-rock, indie-folk, singer-songwriter, alternative pop, pop punk, emo and everything in between.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Using sound design and music arrangement to direct the listeners emotion.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: By using my expertise and advanced music production skills I help artists develop their ideas into the best representation of their vision. Sometimes the song needs just a guitar and a voice, sometimes we need a full orchestra and sometimes an accordion can save your track. I'm always down to experiment!
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: 7 hours drinking coffee and talking with artist + 1 hour of intensive creative work = Awesome art
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My main studio was a two-story garage. It's a cozy space perfectly set up for uninterrupted creativity. With a fireplace, mood lighting, and everything you need at arm's length. But I love to leave my studio sometimes to change the vibe taking my MacBook and audio interface out in the wild.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I love The 1975 for their very creative and sincere yet accessible approach to music. Rick Rubin always inspired me as a producer who just lets the artists be themselves. Jacquire King produced some of my favourite indie and rock records. And I absolutely love what Jack Antonoff is doing with indie and pop artists.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Clients often come to me with raw demos and song ideas and I help them develop them into fully-produced ready for release commercially sounding tracks. While working on them I prioritise artists vision and identity helping them to tell their story in the most impactful and authentic way.
