Interview with Ryan Merida

Analog or digital and why?
Both, because both tools when used properly can create a big well toned sound.
What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
I have been working with audio equipment since I was 14 years old. I have been making a full time living mixing music since I was 18 years old. From concerts to studio I never stop mixing sound.
How would you describe your style?
Very aggressive mix style, I can hear in my head the way I think this song should sound if it was on the radio and I work the sound board to achieve the goal in my head.
Can you share one music production tip?
Don't constantly add more, decide what you want to achieve and know when you have achieved that. Its best to keep it simple and stop adding when the song is as it should be.
What type of music do you usually work on?
Mostly american pop but I also do a lot of reggael hip hop, rock, and latin jazz.
What's your strongest skill?
Vocal harmony mixing, comping, tuning. And guitar mixing, I love to give guitar tracks very fat and warm tone.
What do you bring to a song?
Most of my clients become regulars for one reason. Crystal clear, and very "in your face" mix. I make the vocal shine and instrumentation warm and smooth.
What's your typical work process?
First I listen. Then I ask the artist/writer/producer what is emotional context of the song. If its dark or upbeat that makes a difference in the way i approach the mix process.
Tell us about your studio setup.
I have two setups, my analog setup uses a Yamaha 2404 analog mixer from the 80's for a nice fat tone. I also use some universal audio outboard stuff to achieve the polished sound im looking for for whatever im working on that day. My second setup is all in the box with a Digidesign 002 mixer/interface and I use that with Pro Tools and all my wonderful Waves plug-ins.
What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
Singer songwriters of every genre inspire me because they are the heart and soul of music itself.
Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
I mix an average of 3 live music concerts per week. The second most common situation I deal with is clients from all over the world sending me songs via dropbox, box, dropkloud, or any file hosting site for me to mix and/or master. When my work is complete I send the finishished product back. I also occasionally do post production mixing for short film and documentaries.
