What I usually do when working with artists:

Step 1 -> Suggest production and songwriting improvements. A good song will be a good song, regardless of the mixing! A good production will give your song additional "Earworm points".

Step 2 -> Good mixing and master is essential for a successful music release. It's the colour grading of a film or the make-up of an actor. :)
