darkcat was amazing to work with, we are a record label sponsored by Tencent Games and we collaborated with darkcat on an original song production for the game project. He has been super creative as well as very easy-going. We had gone through a number of rounds of revisions and changes, he has been very patient and paid attention to the details. Definitely recommend anyone to work with him!

darkcat was a pleasure to work with! I asked them to compose and produce an original song for my comic series, and it turned out amazing. You do have to be clear with what you want so there will be no miscommunication, but other than that, the work delivered is great.

Interview with dark cat

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I worked on the track "dark cat - BUBBLE TEA (feat. juu & cinders)", this is my favorite song that I have written and has reached around 100m streams throughout various platforms. I wrote the entire track, the arrangement, the mixing, the sounds, the mastering. I wrote the vocal melody for "juu" to sing. I organized vocals for the project. That song is 100% me and I am so happy people like it!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I have just finished a commission for a rhythm game based in China developed by Tencent and also just having finished a semester of classes in "Portuguese for foreigners"!

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Digital for sure. It's just so much easier to manage so many synths and plugins within my DAW instead of having 15 synths scattered around the room. And IMO it doesn't sound that much different.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I will finish the project before the deadline set by the client and provide a perfect track to the client, and if it needs to be "fixed", or the client has a suggestion, I will do exactly what my client says.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I love to write music and create things, especially for others. I actually never thought you could make a living as a "at-home song producer" but here I am

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: I think it's "Can you sound like X but with some of Y?" This is not a problem for me, but I will spend some time studying these songs and understanding the arrangement so I can create a song that I think will suit you!

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: I don't think there's any misconceptions about what I do, it's pretty straight forward. I make a song / musical composition for you.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: I would ask 1. Do you want to buy-out all the rights to the audio? 2. How long are you expecting the track to be (in terms of time)? 3. Could you send me references of music that you wish for me to take inspiration from? 4. What is the deadline for this project?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: I think it's important for you to know what you want beforehand. It makes it a lot easier for me to digest your request and give you something you will enjoy.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: I would take my laptop, headphones, audio interface, my external drives and my computer mouse. Although I am not sure if that's any use on an island.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: Before I was able to do music for a living, I was a mail-man and a student! I studied and completed my associates' degree in computer science. But by the time I finished my associates' degree, I was already able to do music full-time. I have been writing music for 9-10 years now

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: My style is more or less all over the place but it still keeps a consistency between tracks. According to the public, I am known for "kawaii future bass", "bubblegum bass genre" and such.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: I would love to work with Justin Bieber because he has such beautiful vocals

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: If you have a lot of elements going on, it helps to mute all of them and introduce them back one by one to find where things go wrong. Once you know which sound causes problems, you can do something about it!

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I do not work under the limitations of "genres", I usually find some really cool samples and sounds, put them together, write some chords or a bassline under it and go from there. I go entirely by sounds and I think that's why every track I write sounds distinctively different (but still the same, because I made it, you know?)

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: My strongest skill has to be songwriting and knowing when a simple idea has the potential to be a really good song. I can tell what works and what doesn't work and I am extremely quick to decide, thus making the song-writing process fast and quick. (spending under 70 hours on a song)

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Everything. I create the entire song from scratch. I take input from my collaborators to include their vision within the song.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: When working on a song, I always started with the hook / drop, the catchiest part of the song. After that I build around the drop, continuing onto the "buildup" and then the breakdown.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I have a laptop, audio interface, headphones and a MIDI controller!

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: I took a lot of inspiration in my early stages of learning how to produce from Tom Norris (getyoursnackon). He created uncanny remakes and it inspired me to push myself harder to learn about other songs.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I write whole entire-tracks (3:00 to 3:50 in length), mix them, choose the sounds, arrangement, mastering. I do everything related from developing an idea into a full entire song.
