Interview with Gold Room Studios
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: We have a new single with the artist "EhCee" called Dead To Society, which has been our most interesting song to mix to date. The entire single was produced, mixed and mastered at our studio with the assistance of our engineers.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Future projects are in the works, many singles and EPs with up and coming artists in Toronto.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: No.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, because it's cheaper.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: We promise you'll like what we do.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: We love music.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: "What is your rate?" Us: "$40 an hour for recording and quick mixdown"
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Sometimes we get mistaken as one-dimensional engineers, but in fact we are multi-dimensional musicians with experience in all realms of music.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: How do you want this piece of music to make you feel?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Make sure you know exactly what you're looking for in terms of production and/or engineering. We will try our best to create ease of communication but it always goes smoother if you know what you want.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Yamaha HS7s, Neumann TLM 103, Apogee Quartet, Roland GAIA, Maschine Studio
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Our engineers at Gold Room Studios have been doing this extensively for 3 years, each engineer having deep interests in music spanning longer than 5-10 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Artist-driven. The opinions of the artist are the most important where we become slaves to them. They control how they want the tracks to sound, and we help them get there.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: James Blake because of his ability to master all realms of the music from singing to engineering on the track.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always go with your gut, however each element makes you feel, pay attention to that.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip-hop, R&B, Alternative R&B, Lo-fi, EDM, Funk, Pop
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Knowing how to make the artist the "star" of the song.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Both of our engineers are strong producers and are artists in their own realms. One of our engineers is a singer/producer with a unique subset of skills pertaining to songwriting, vocal arrangement, harmonization, and knowing how to make the artist the "main instrument".
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: We generally start with an idea from a single source of inspiration, whether it be creating a song from scratch or even mixing/mastering a new song. We like to go in with elements of what we like to hear and go from there. Once we're in go-mode, we don't stop.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Yamaha HS7s, Neumann TLM 103, Apogee Quartet, Roland GAIA, Maschine Studio
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Timbaland, Chris Lord-Alge, Tom Lord-Alge, Leslie Brathwaite, Pharrell Williams, Deadmau5, Boi-1da, Bighead, 40
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: At Gold Room Studios, we specialize in studio recording and mixing in-session. Our engineers are well versed in production and vocal arrangement which we help the artists in as well.
