Interview with Leonardo Catani DDR

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: There are many projects I’m proud of, but one recent highlight is a track I produced for the soundtrack of an Italian film by Leonardo Pieraccioni.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Several productions and albums where I’m involved in both songwriting and mixing/mastering.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I don’t know anyone personally.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both have unique advantages. I believe the best results come from combining them and taking the best of both worlds.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: To always give 100% and bring their project as close as possible to their expectations.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Turning a demo into a professional product, and making mixes sound great.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: They often ask me to make their tracks loud but still dynamic and balanced. My answer is always: “Yes!”

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That we can endlessly change the original source material. We can enhance it—sometimes dramatically—but there are always limits.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I ask about their background, what they want to communicate, and their main artistic references.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Look for someone who is not just a technician, but also has an artistic approach.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: A pair of high-quality monitors, quality converters, a Macbook, a Nord Stage 3 piano, and a Sennheiser MD-441 microphone.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I’ve been working professionally for 15 years, but I’ve been playing and experimenting with music since childhood.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: A mix of modern and vintage.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Kevin Parker of Tame Impala, for his songwriting skills and his taste in sound design.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Pay attention to tonal balance. It’s crucial to get it right for the track and is often underestimated.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Rock, Pop, Hip-Hop, Trap, Rap, World Music, R&B, Alternative.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I’m passionate about crafting great vocal and drum sounds, but I also love shaping an overall modern mix that has punch while preserving musical dynamics.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Both artistic and technical expertise to make a track as communicative and genre-appropriate as possible.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: For mixing and mastering, I first focus on understanding the artist’s vision: what they want to communicate and the type of sound they’re aiming for. I often ask for references or premixes to guide the process. If I’m given creative freedom, I let the song itself guide me and always aim to add maximum value to the project.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work on a latest-generation Mac Studio, using a hybrid mixing approach with both plugins and hardware. My analog mastering chain helps finalize tracks, and I monitor on HEDD Type 20 Mk2 three-way speakers without a subwoofer.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: There are many producers and mixing engineers, especially from the U.S., who inspire my sound. One artist I particularly admire is Kevin Parker.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I work on productions and arrangements, studio recordings, mixing, and mastering. Sometimes just editing. These services can be separate, or I can take care of an entire project from start to finish.
