Julia Wood on SoundBetter

I sing, topline, write lyrics, add harmonies. I can create solo cello melodies, arrange and layer to make it sound like a full string ensemble, whatever you need. I can improvise, play your ideas, and record from my home studio and send it back to you or your producer in a quick turn around time.

Originally inspired by Damien Rice to play cello for artists and bands. I would love to work on music for you!

Julia has a beautiful voice and recorded a vocal for a lyrical, melodic song of mine. She has a charming timbre and graceful delivery, knowing how to fit the mood of the song. I especially appreciated her skillful use of vibrato in the moments where it fit the song. Julia is easy to communicate with and I highly recommend her for vocals. She recorded a lead vocal and various harmony options and gave me high resolution stems as well as a few rough mixes to help me generate ideas when mixing.

Interview with Julia Wood

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: Maybe that I need parts written out for me already... I can read music and play parts and can also create a cello part for you!

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: Professional session musician for over 10 years, been doing recording sessions in my own home studio for 3 years professionally.

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: Emotional folk/classical.

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: India Arie because she’s such an inspiring artist and it would be so fun to play with her!

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: Have a critical ear and trust your instincts.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Singer songwriter, folk, and artists focused on sync licensing.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: My musicianship and flexibility.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: Some good sliding, emotional cello.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: I listen to the song, and then record over it in sections. I’ll complete each song section as I go along, clean up all my takes, add dynamics, mix parts to make it sound balanced and appropriate, add maybe some reverb, and bounce over an mp3 and wav file over to my clients and see what they think. If clients request individual stems, I can do that, but they usually prefer my cello work as a package pre-done for them. It saves them time and ensures my ear for the ideas I want to be brought out in each project.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: I use an Audio Technica mic, Scarlett Focusrite and LogicProX.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: Damien Rice, Mumford and Sons, 2Cellos, producer Ryan Hadlock of Bear Creek Studios

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: Clients send over a track that either has midi cello they would like me to play, emulate, expand upon, or improvise over. I usually add lots of layers, and options for artists to choose from, depending on project needs.
