Interview with Olaf

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Those would be touring live as guitarist with Blue Man Group and Cirque du Soleil.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m working on a mix of projects—some session work, a commercial recordings, and even some personal creative work.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I will always recommend someone, if I think they're better suited for the job.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: All analog up until the signal hits the interface, then stay digital for precision, flexibility, and efficiency, which is essential for modern workflows. Then back to the analog world through the speakers or headphones.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: A high-quality, professional recording that serves your music and helps bringing your vision to life.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The perfect mix of creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: "How much do you charge?" Answer: "Rates can vary depending on the project’s complexity, number of tracks, and turnaround time. I’m happy to discuss a budget that works for both of us while ensuring you get the best quality recording." "How quickly can you get this done?" Answer: "It depends on the project, but I always aim for a quick and professional turnaround. If you have a specific deadline, let me know, and I’ll do my best to accommodate!" "Can you make it sound like Brad Paisley?" Answer: "No, but I can definitely capture the vibe and style of a particular artist while making sure it still fits your unique sound. If you have reference tracks, that always helps!" "How many revisions do I get?" Answer: "I typically include 1 revision to make sure you're happy with the final result. If more adjustments are needed, we can figure out a fair approach." "What gear do you use?" Answer: "I use high-quality instruments, mics, and recording equipment to ensure a professional sound. If you’re looking for something specific, let me know, and I’ll see what I can do!" "What happens if I don’t like what you recorded?" Answer: "I want you to love the final track, so I always include a revision to tweak things if needed. Clear communication upfront helps ensure we get it right the first time!"

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That I just show up, lay down a track and boom - hit song.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What’s the overall vibe or genre of your project can you provide a demo? Do you have any reference tracks or artists that inspired the sound you're going for? Are you looking for a note-for-note performance or do you want creative input form my side? What’s your timeline for this project? How many revisions do you anticipate needing? What’s your budget for this session? What is your preferred way of communication throughout the process?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Communication is key, be open about your expectations, and don’t hesitate to ask questions. Also expect to be surprised.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: With electricity? If none, an acoustic and my mandolin. Oh, and some picks strings!
