Sathesh "iLL Krux" on SoundBetter

Looking for an engineer to get your next hit record mix and/or mastered? Help you edit your podcasts? Looking for professional sounding product and not burn your pockets for it? I'm at your service. Backed with proper audio education, local industry experience and international clients, I can get the job done!

Started as an engineer in Malaysia's biggest satellite TV/Radio company, Astro. Became a dubbing engineer at a high profile Korean company, i-Yuno. Carried on to build my career as a freelance audio engineer expanding my services to clients locally and as far as the UK, U.S and mostly Asia.

I've been working for a lot of Malaysian local artists (Psychomantra, DJ Mastermind, Viveck Ji) and international (DJ Lethal Skillz, Vandigital, B-Xplicit etc). My work mostly lands on the post production department handling the mixing and/or mastering. Produced multiple records for indie artists. Recently produced, recorded, mixed and mastered an entire EP for a local indie artist, "Orga".

My specialty ended up being on Hip Hop/Trap. Being a rapper myself inspiring legends from the Golden Era, I believe I can bring the impact your records need. I specialize in finding my own sound for your records at the same time maintaining your requests and references. I inspire engineers like Manny Marroquin, Tony Maserati and Dave Pensado.

Your end goal of your product is ultimately the final objective and we will get there until you decide we're there. I prefer working with artists who bring a positive vibe where we both can grow. If you got a hit Hip Hop/Trap record in mind, let's make it happen!

Interview with Sathesh "iLL Krux"

  1. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  2. A: Editing, mixing, mastering and sometimes restoration.

  3. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  4. A: Scott Storch, Eminem, Dr.Dre, Sicknature, Marco Polo, Pharrell Williams, Childish Gambino, Michael "Seven" Summers etc.

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: Central unit is the Motu 8pre-es running on a Windows machine. I use Kali Audio LP-6 as main monitors and Mixcubes for mix checks and Sennheiser HD600s as headphones. I use Cubase Pro as my choice of DAW. I run UAD 1176, Empirical Labs Disstresors, Rupert Neve 542, and Wesaudio Dione as my outboard gears to setup my hybrid mixing system.

  7. Q: What's your typical work process?

  8. A: I strictly make sure the source material is at its best quality before even considering a project because I strongly believe in all the processes of a production being in multiple of them myself. If the source is optimal, mixing them is very straight forward. I always work closely with the artist/producer and make sure I know what is it that they exactly want from their record. From there, I take their vision and use all my skills and tools to bring them to life. I tend to add my own ear candies and touches. Sometimes the clients like it sometimes they don't. Their satisfaction is ultimately my end goal with my process.

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: I believe I am the bridge between a professional record and the client. I form myself to be that engineer who touches a mix and blows the mind of my clients beyond their expectations. I'm a strong believe in energy, frequency and vibrations. Songs are the fundamentals of waves. They contain everything the 3 accumulate. I do my best to bring the best vibe to a record that can touch the audience mentally and emotionally.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: I look at myself as a strong mix engineer than I am a mastering engineer. Over the years I have grown to become really great at vocal mix which I love the most to mix too.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: Hip Hop and Trap.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Don't ever get technical with music production. If you have a vibe that's playing in you, produce that out. Don't overthink anything at all. Simplicity is key.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: I've always wanted to work with Dr.Dre especially to understand his work process and mix techniques.

  19. Q: How would you describe your style?

  20. A: Follow the vibe type of engineer. I have OCD so I'm too particular at my work. But that became more of plus than minus because I tend to make less mistakes that allows me to follow my instincts more.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: In my young age, I never really knew what I wanted to do. Music sort of made its way into my life. I started off making songs. Rapping etc. But through that, I learned post production which took my interest by surprise. From that point on, that's what I have been pursuing for over 7 years now.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: Computer/Laptop, Interface, Disstresor, Headphones. That's all I may need and still save mixes until the power runs out.

  25. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  26. A: I kindly request clients to truly understand their records and know what is it that they want from their music. I can definitely bring my vision out if you don't quite know but if you have a basic vision, that would be very helpful. Kindly make sure your materials are all in good quality. I can make a great production sound amazing but can't make an OK production sound great. Be positive and we can bounce the energy off of each other.

  27. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  28. A: What made him/her choose to be so? What are the inspirations they look up to? Where do they expect to reach?

  29. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  30. A: That I can make any project sound amazing regardless of how the source materials is. I can fix anything. I can mix anything and make anything work.

  31. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  32. A: Can you go cheaper? I understand the consumer stand point, I have been one. But quality services demand the right rates as we as professional providers have to handle costs as well. I'd highly appreciate the understanding. I do this for a living and I make sure I be as reasonable as possible at the same time. Thank you.

  33. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  34. A: Listening to various vibes of artists and producers. Listening to the sounds of minds that creates the records. And of course every project is blank canvas that sometimes allows me to invent or relearn a skill.

  35. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  36. A: Bring me quality record and I'll make it shine. I always work close with my clients so they can always depend on me to listen to their vision and get to where they wish to.

  37. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  38. A: Best of both worlds. Unlike before, digital is slowly blurring the line with analog emulation plugins however, I still prefer at least one analog gear to give that vibe and depth which is why I have the Neve 542s. The workflow and versatility of digital and color of analog.

  39. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  40. A: None. I'm new here. If I network with some, I definitely would.

  41. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  42. A: An EP album for a local indie artist "Orga" who is also my friend.

  43. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  44. A: As mentioned above, the EP album titled "Kavibars". I entirely produced, mixed and mastered the album which is by far my best work as well.
