Interview with Giovanni Vitulano

  1. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  2. A: Learn by using it, even before you know how.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: I usually work on pop productions influenced by alternative elements, ranging from rock to electronic music.

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: I have a strong memory and can handle complex sessions while keeping the entire process well organized. I also produce in a way that ensures the song already sounds great, even at the demo stage.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: Usually, my contribution is bringing modernity and emotion to the track, as well as recording real synthesizers and instruments that give the song an authentic, emotional sound. The same goes for mixing—I always try to prioritize emotion above everything else. I’m less technical and more driven by feeling.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: Talking about production, my slogan is “Every song is different.” I usually start from whatever I receive from the client—sometimes it’s a sample, sometimes a topline, or a rough production draft. If I’m starting from scratch, I like to begin by playing guitar or laying down some drums, and then I build the rest of the arrangement around that. I also really enjoy recording live instruments and vocals! When it comes to mixing, I usually start from the fullest sections of the arrangement, where the emotional intensity is often at its peak. From there, I shape the balance of the instruments based on their “emotional priority,” and that’s how the mix starts to come to life.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: Focal twin6 be, moog synthesizers, prophet rev 2, yamaha keyboards MacBook m4 Pro, soma cosmos, pedals by hologram, audient AD-DA system, fender guitars, neumann microphones

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: I’m really drawn to a certain kind of production, especially the work of Australian producer Kevin Parker (Tame Impala). Another great producer I admire is Jim-E Stack—he blends electronic elements with pop and lo-fi in a way that sounds incredible to me.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: Music production and composing, mixing and mastering
