Tony Craddock, Jr. on SoundBetter

"Smooth, but not too smooth." My music has aired on Music Choice, Sirius XM Radio, and The Weather Channel. I have recorded on projects produced by recorded for Grammy-winning gospel producer Daniel Weatherspoon and Grammy-nominated jazz guitarist/producer Ken Navarro.

I aim for a sound with the richness and depth of Anita Baker's voice. My priority is creating dynamic melodies and solos to enhance the musical vision of the artist/producer, and tasteful accompaniment to complement lead vocal and instrumental parts. I am also an experienced composer and arranger.

I have also released three albums and four singles as featured artist.

Here's what a few industry veterans have said about my sound:

- "The maturity of his vision for life and music is quite compelling and is born out in the sound of his horn." -- Kirk Whalum, Grammy Award-winning saxophonist and composer

- “It warmed my heart the first time I heart it. It was like a warm cup of hot chocolate on a blustery winter day with caramel drizzle on top.” -- Makeba Riddick-Woods, Grammy Award-winning songwriter, on my cover of the gospel hit song "Won't He Do It" (Koryn Hawthorne)

- "Tony Craddock, Jr. is an important part of the new generation of contemporary jazz musicians in my honest opinion.” -- Grammy-nominated jazz guitarist Ken Navarro

It was a pleasure to work with Tony. I’d heard his music before and I as excited to have the opportunity to add his sax to my new track. He’s a real professional and is detail oriented. Tony’s sax tones and textures are out of this world. I’m extremely pleased with the final results. Hire him!!!

Interview with Tony Craddock, Jr.

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: Provide a clear artistic vision, but leave room for me to enhance that vision.

  3. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  4. A: Kirk Franklin. A lot of my favorite songs of all-time are his, and his creative genius completely revolutionized gospel music. I also know I could learn a lot from him.

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: Use motifs/themes that are already in the production as the foundation for any additional parts that'll be added. For instance, most songs with a full rhythm section and other instruments already have a lot going on, so when I add my saxophone, I want it to complement the track, rather than clutter it.

  7. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  8. A: My great friend and mentor Ken Navarro — chart-topping and Grammy-nominated guitarist-producer — hired me to perform soprano sax on his song “Green Chile Stew.” I was honored because Ken had just finished producing my album H20, and recording on his project brought our studio relationship full circle.

  9. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  10. A: I’m writing songs — instrumental and vocal — for my fourth album. The album will have more vocals than my past work and also lean more heavily towards the gospel and R&B/soul side of thing.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: Smooth, but not too smooth.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: Gospel, smooth jazz, R&B/soul.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: Tone. My tone is warm with a touch of brightness. I aim for a quality that has the depth and richness of Anita Baker’s voice.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: AKG C414 condenser microphone and Apple Logic Pro X. I love the AKG because it’s an accurate mic that captures the essence of all my horns with a nice warmth.
