Interview with Studio Malibu
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, Hip-Hop & Electronic. But my background is in orchestral and rock.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Studio Malibu was recently designed by Carl Yanchar (of NBC San Diego, ABC Disney, Capitol Recording Studios, CBS records, and Ocean Way Studios) according to the exact specifications laid forth by David Levy. The design bridges the gap between the realm of television/film production and the realm of audio/music production. From its appearance to its functionality, obvious to anyone who enters, no corners were cut nor shortcuts taken in its design and construction. Featuring exotic woods from Hawaii and Brazil, and lush ocean views of the pacific, its character immediately sets a warm tone. Our Control Room features a Trident Console, Built in London in the mid 1970’s. The Console has 28 Channels along with 24 bus channels capable of 52 Channels in Mix. Built into the front wall of the room, our main monitors, designed and built by Jerry Steckling, (founder of JSX Audio and former Chief of Acoustic Engineering at Skywalker Sound) consists of two 15-inch woofers (TL 1601A) and a Northwest Radial Horn (TL-4001) similar to that of the original George Ausberger TAD Designs. The room also features a large sub cabinet houses an extremely powerful McCauley 18 inch woofer. Driven by 3 highly oversized AB International 712 amplifiers, the overall room design allowed for a perfectly flat frequency response with zero EQ. Studio Malibu not only features an arsenal of rare vintage gear, from Neve to Universal Audio, it also features the pinnacle in cutting edge digital equipment from such companies as Avid, Digidesign & Apple. We believe strongly in working with the right combination of vintage and modern equipment, in order to assure the best sounds possible, whilst still maintaining a fast work-flow. All rooms are linked together with audio and video; We use an HDMI video communication system which features a video word clock and an HDMI amplifier, preventing the possibility of video delay between rooms. This ensures a perfectly accurate way to track live in all rooms simultaneously. Making the studio perfect for not only music, but for film scoring, ADR, foley, VFX, Green Screen and much more.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Vocals & Mixing. Aside from having one of the most accurate rooms, we have an amazing vintage mic collection. Plus, our vocal studio overlooks the ocean, which immediately sets the mood.
