One of the top session singers in NYC, Charlene has been featured on several national and international commercials, has worked with well known producers and done remote sessions for clients all around the world. I like to really PERFORM your song and bring it to life!
I'm Charlene. I've been working as a session singer for years in NYC. I previously lived in Nashville and in London. I do many remote sessions online and have a big list of satisfied clients ranging from well known producers to jingle houses to independent songwriters.
I sang backup for M.I.A., performed solo live at Julliard for then first lady of France Carla Bruni, sang demos for producer William Orbit for Madonna's MDNA album, was the singer on the New York Knick's anthem, singer on an international commercial for Smirnoff doing cover of Kiss's "Crazy Nights" and more.
I'm different than just a good singer because I've been in the studio a lot, session singing is different than any other kind of singing! I know also how to really perform a song and come into the emotion of it. I love what I do and I love making your project come to life! I take direction well and want you to be happy with what you get. I want to add VIBE, PERFORMANCE, TONE and ATTITUDE to your project and make it sparkle!

Charlene is gifted singer! She has great instincts and is extremely versatile among many genres. She knows how to bring a project alive with a stand out vocal performance that will have people listening!
Charlene is a true pro! We've done many sessions together over the years and have landed several commercials together. She's one of the few session singers that can nail the brief exactly how the client asks but still put an artistic spin on it and make it her own. Highly recommend her!
I can truly say that Charlene is a very unique and true talent. Not only does she have a beautiful instrument in her voice but she also brings a very cool sensibility and expression to her work because she is an artist. I always love hearing what she is up to because I know it's going to be well performed done and cool!
Charlene is incredible! She is my go to singer for any project I'm working on, no matter the genre. I've literally had hundreds of sessions with her and have never been dissatisfied. She can adapt her voice to any style and is extremely easy to get along with. Charlene is at the very top of her craft and I've been extremely lucky to have met her.
Interview with Charlene Ava
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes! I have many colleagues and friends on SoundBetter! If I'm not suitable for the job, I always have many others I can willingly recommend.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: That I get to bring your song to life! :-)
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That any good singer can record a song for you. Live singing and studio singing are very different!
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Have everything prepared and know what you want. Make sure you have a scratch vocal of the lead and a track that is well quantized so I can sing to it. Also, know your BPM and make sure you tell me that info too.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A microphone and a big amplifier and an electric guitar and a loop pedal and a notebook/pen. And yes, a notebook/pen is a piece gear and a very important piece of gear! Writing lyrics and just writing any stream of consciousness is important in any creative process.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would say it's always emotion driven no matter what genre I'm working on. I like to feel my way through any song I'm singing. A song is a monologue and all singers should learn the craft of acting because the song must be felt and lived through the whole way.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: LISTEN. Understand the project you are working on before you record a thing.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work on all types of pop and rock songs. I sing a lot of jingles too.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Performing the song as I said, but I'm also very good with arranging harmonies. I do it most often in a spontaneous way, going with my gut and how I feel.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I listen first to any references you send. This is key! Listening is important, to understand the vibe you want, your direction and what you are looking for. I always do this before recording any project.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm working on my own album at the moment. :-)
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: You will like the results very much.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been doing this 14 years! And I love it. It never gets old for me.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Radiohead! I have been a big fan for years. They are unique and every record they put out has a concept to it that is strange and amazing. I like when artists take the time to express something interesting to the world.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Performance, emotion. This is a very important ingredient that a lot recording artists forget about. It's not just about the technical skill, it's about bringing the meaning of the song alive. Because I've sung so much in the studio, I really have a knack for bringing a song alive on tape.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I work with many big production houses in NYC, LA, London and all over the world.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I do lots of song demos and jingle recordings. I'm good at putting that sparkle on your recording so that you can pitch it to win it! Singing on tape is completely different than singing live! I bring that experience to your project to make it sound great. This what I do for a living, nothing else. And I enjoy it.
