Craig Ross on SoundBetter

Assisting artists in Production, Mixing, and musicianship for 30 years.

Over 30 years of experience playing, Producing, and Mixing artists from all over the world.

After years of owning and operating studios, to travelling and working out of various facilities, currently i have a dedicated mix facility on the Sunshine Coast of Australia. Mixing is a process I love to be a part of whether it has been a project I have been involved in the production or not.

For Productions ... these days I usually draw from a team of musicians I trust around the globe with studios ready to go as well as covering much of the playing myself. Whatever a project needs, we can see your songs come together with the assistance of world class musicians and singers.

All genres ... any budget ... I'm certain we can help bring your songs and your story to life.

Had the chance to do a song/mix with Craig Ross. I can say he's an exceptionally talented mix engineer with a creative approach. The song turned out extraordinarily well. He took great care in planning and listening to my vision. It was clear this was personal to him and not just another job to rush through. I highly recommend Craig. Even though he's in Australia, you'll be treated like you're sitting at the same mix board. Thanks Craig.

Craig is a talented musician, writer and producer. I've had the pleasure of working with him on numerous projects over the last 4 years. I always appreciate his professionalism, excellence and integrity each time. During both pre and post-production, Craig is a joy to work with; he is encouraging, supportive and innovative. He has a great ear for tone, feel for grove and won't settle for second in anything during any part of the recording and production process. It's my pleasure to give my highest recommendation for Craig's work.

I have had the privilege of working with Craig on several projects over the last ten years. He breathes life into every project that he takes on, bringing the dream into reality. He brings texture and depth and creates a beautiful space for your story to be told. He is a master at creating lush layers of sound that leave space for the vocal to be heard and to shine. He knows how to bring out the best in you and your music. He is truly a musical genius with years of experience and expertise, and he brings all of that to your project. What a lovely guy to work with. Thanks Craig.

I've had the pleasure of working with Craig on multiple projects. His years of experience are notable; from the insightful perspectives during the writing process to the encouragement and advice offered throughout recording and mixing, he makes the whole process seem a little less daunting and helps to refine the ideas that an artist holds. He is clearly passionate about helping others share their stories and it is evident in his approach. I look forward to working with Craig in the future.

I’ve worked with Craig on 2 album releases where he was producer and mixer.

Nothing was too much trouble, everything was achievable and Craig brought a perspective to the tracks that took them from ideas and concepts to reality. He was approachable, honest and not scared of having the tough conversations to bring the best out in each song.

I’m looking forward to working on some new music soon with Craig

I have worked with Craig Ross over four projects spanning nearly twenty years. As an award winning singer songwriter I am aware that Craig’s production is a significant part of my success. Every time I have the privilege of working with this man I am overwhelmed by his talent, musicianship, and rare ability to take a good project and create something totally incredible while still maintaining the heart and sound of the artist. He empowers artists to be transformed by the process, with the depth and breadth of his knowledge being a rich resource for both seasoned artist and novice alike.

Craig is the best and i always find pleasure working with him on a mix, he is always very efficient with his communication and getting the Job done, what makes him stand out form the rest apart from his exceptional technical expertise is that he will go the extra mile to help you get what you need and very patient through it all. He is also a great musician and has insight in this aspect if you need. He is highly recommended.

Over 13 year, my small team and I produced 11 films - some of them snowboard/ski films, some documentaries. We wrote, performed and recorded our own soundtracks for some of them. I have spent long hours with Craig both remotely and in his studio. This guy is a wizard! Some of our field recordings have been in terrible condition, and Craig has done wonders. The guy’s wisdom, technical skills (and humor) are second to none. The sheer diversity of his projects speaks volumes of his many talents. No matter what your project is, Craig is the producer to take your work to that next level.

Craig Ross is an amazing producer. He helped clean up my raw takes with whatever I sent and so amazed at what the track sounded like after he was done with it. His great work and skill allowed me to scoop 2 music awards for Best New Artist in 2018 and Best English Song in 2019 at the FPRA Music Awards. I would highly recommend him as he knows exactly what the track needs.
Looking forward to working with him in a few more tracks.

I really enjoyed having Craig’s musical direction. He made me feel comfortable in the studio and took our music in the direction we were after. Incredibly happy with the result!

Working with Craig was a wonderful experience. We went into the studio knowing what we wanted but not knowing how to get there. Craig listened, gave welcome direction and helped our songs tell the story we were trying to tell. He made us feel completely comfortable, making the creative process much easier. Super happy with our EP!

Interview with Craig Ross

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Digital ... there's so much recall now.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: I'll give them 100%

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: The music and diversity of artists.

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: That we can "fix it in the mix" and / or mastering can fix a bad mix.

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: I'm all about melodies and finding that perfect place for the vocal to sit.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Mix with your ears ... not your eyes.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: Who is your audience?

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Be sure that we understand what you want to be heard and who you believe your audience is.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: Does the Island have power?

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I started by signing a songwriting deal straight out of school. I spent a lot of time on the road playing for different artists and travelling extensively. It was being a part of the recording process for those artists that I started developing a love for the process of recording. Eventually I stepped back from touring and began to do more and more on the studio side of things. I started a production company and began assisting artists from songwriting through the recording process and eventually was brought in by a start up label that was developing between Australia and Nashville. The corporate side of things was one of the many effected in the early 2000's by the industry changes. So I ended up building a studio on the coast that would facilitate the work I was doing. It's been 30 years that I've been in the industry. There's been many changes but the love of good songs and an audience that is keen to discover them still exists. It's a privilege to still be a part of it all and doing what I love.

  21. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  22. A: Keane ... Great vocal and the way they layer melodies is beautiful.

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: Most of my work is with Singers (and Bands) that are the primary Songwriters. Ultimately I started in the industry as a Songwriter and signed a publishing deal very early in my career. I love the art of songwriting and production is the art of telling the story. Much of my work is helping artists get the their stories out.

  25. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  26. A: I'd like to say I bring colour and clarity to a song. I'm always reaching for the story being told, enhancing the emotion that's trying to come through and bring the listener into what's going on as much as possible.

  27. Q: What's your typical work process?

  28. A: I spend a lot of time communicating with the client and get as much of the story in the song I'm working on. Then much of the first hour or so of the mix I'm setting a good balance and getting a feel for what is there. Then begin to reach for things and try as best I can help tell that story.

  29. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  30. A: I work between ProTools and Logic. With projects that I'm a part of from the outset, I'll start in Logic and create the broad picture and soundscape for the songs, then move into tools once the tracking is underway. ProTools is my platform for mixing. I have a variety of outboard gear for colour including Avalon's, DBX's, and other racks I've accumulated over the year, but like many, I rely heavily on UAD for a lot of processing with a huge range of plugins in the box.

  31. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  32. A: Mixing and generally helping clients complete their projects.
