Interview with Tay
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Right now I'm working on establishing myself as an artist. I've spent the past few years really working out my sound and style and learning how to work and collaborate with others. Now I'm in the second phase which is to put out my original content, and creating the strategy around that.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise that you'll get a unique sound.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: It helps me express the sides of myself I usually keep on lock down. Music has been my saving grace in many ways and I want my music to be able to help & inspire others.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a home studio.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: I mainly get questions about how I'm able to write music so quickly and I answer by saying that I spend time flowing into the music and really connecting with the feeling and then the rest just flows.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception about songwriting & singing is that it's all about the vocal strength. I always say you can have incredible precision with your notes and have all the best writers, but the emotion behind the song cannot be practiced, it needs to be felt.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: The main question would be about the song itself, what it means to the client, how they envision it and then I would ask for some examples of vocal styles that they can envision on the track.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be open, I'm a big feeler when it comes to my writing and singing and the more we can share the inspiration behind the song and how you feel about it, the better I can make that come to life.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Push 2, Computer, Guitar, Piano & Microphone.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've always known I wanted to be in music, I've been singing and writing songs since I was a young kid and now my day-time job is working for a music publishing company & label. I'm 23 and I thought, if I'm going to do it, I've gotta go all the way and so that's why I'm here.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I'm a little bit of a mixed bag, my style can change depending on my mood, I can be sweet and soft one second and then turn around and have this aggressive edge.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would really love to work with Ben Bohmer, Lane 8 & Spencer Brown. When I listen to their music it takes me somewhere else, it's very magical.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Add in unexpected elements. There's nothing I love more than a track where it has a catchy beat but has pops of things I don't expect, it keeps me on my toes.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: My heart and soul is in electronic music, I really love songs that have a cinematic feel and emphasis points that go along with the lyrics in the song.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Singing & Songwriting as well as assisting with production elements.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: For being so young, I have been through a lot in life, experiencing every range of emotions to the extreme. I live my everyday life in a poetic way and put meaning to many experiences which I think reflects into my writing and singing.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I generally work very fast, I would start out by asking you about what the song means to you, what inspired it and what kind of emotion you're looking to bring to it. Once I've gauged what you're looking for, I'd spend a day or two sitting with the song and begin to feel out a melody, then I'd start the writing process. Once I finish the first verse and chorus, I'd send a rough demo recording to see where you stand on the track and if you like it then I'd finish the remainder of the song and send back another rough demo. What I like to do from that point is to listen to it over the next few days and write down any revisions and/or other improvements and send back. Once we're at a point where you love it, then I'd book a studio session to record vocals and I can either comp them myself with all the best takes, or I can send all the files back to you, to use how you wish.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm really inspired by artists like Billie Eilish, Banks, Lana Del Rey. I appreciate their writing style and how it showcases a depth of emotion.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: My specialty lives in the realm of singing and songwriting but I'm also incredibly passionate about electronic music and I am able to offer unique and innovative spins on the production side as well.
