I've had the honor of mixing Little Big Town, The Band Perry, Point Of Grace, Devon Gilfillian, Striking Matches and more... Mixing and Mastering is a process that I really enjoy and I don't cut corners. If someone were to ask me what is the most important aspect to producing? I would respond "Never lose the song or the artist in that process."
It all started for me in 1987. After working with a record producer in LA for the release of our debut record, (Bloodgood) I said to myself, "I want to do that, I want to be a produce!" I found a couple of indie bands and produced their demos (for next to nothing.) Both bands got signed to record deals... My strength back then was in composition not engineering, that came a number of years later. My main instrument, is the guitar, it's my musical sounding board. I also have a passion for programming (electronic, strings, grooves, keys-pads. etc...)
Mixing for me, is almost like therapy. Its like I'm in another world, separating out all the sonic details of a musical expression. Everything has its own space with an overall glue that holds it together.
Mastering is a bit different, I do love it, but I got into it for a different reason...
I would finish a mix that the Artist, A&R and all parties felt like it was perfection, and after the mastering, it was brick wall, with sizzling artifacts, with hardly any of the original dynamics or transients. That being said, that's pretty much when I got into it.
