Hello, my name is Nora and I am a music composer and producer. I mainly focus on psychedelic ambient/downtempo and psytrance/goa trance/darkpsy-forest genres, however I have experience in working with jazz big bands, metal bands, art-rock bands, and I was even working as a mixing engineer on a contemporary electronic-pop project from Poland.

Interview with Nora Smith

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: I started learning music in 2006, then I was attending the University of Pécs on the Faculty of Arts. Later on I have completed an official Ableton Live course at imPro School of Music Technology in Budapest. I have a full-length album released by Beats Hotel Records in 2017, and have performed live acts on several music festivals - including Sziget festival Hungary - from 2016 to present.

  3. Q: How would you describe your style?

  4. A: I like glitch-sounds and most people say that my style could be described as "glitchy" and "gnarly".

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: I like experimenting with generative composition; I have a thorough technique in using various MIDI effects in composing a melody from just a set of chromatic notes in 2 octaves (all notes). With this technique it is easy to get new ideas, and re-use them in your song.

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: I mostly work on psybient/downtempo, techno/techtrance, psytrance/forest and contemporary clasical music compositions. I am eager to learn and stay open-minded at all times.

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: My strongest skill is the understanding of musical harmony and music theory. My second strongest skill is sound design on synthesizers and samplers.

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: I was playing in numerous band on multiple instruments in the past, I like to think that I have a general overview on music and harmony. Because of it, I have experience in songwriting and sound design, and can easily set the mood of a song. I think I could provide thorough service in finding your sound based on discussed reference tracks and help you with even writing/arranging your song.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: I like working according to a well-crafted and approved brief. Before I start the job, I like to perform a de-briefing, in which I ensure that all is understood, so I can save time with the actual work and keep the deadlines more easily.

  16. A: My workstation currently consists of: - mac mini (late 2012) - AKAI EIE Pro - AKAI MPK mini - AKAI APC20 - Novation Launchkey 49 - Roland JP-8080 - Korg Volca FM - Korg KaossPad miniKP - Audio Technika AT2020 - Ibanez electric guitar - Aria electric bass

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: I am in love with the FM-mania, I highly appreciate all the sound designers using frequency modulation techniques.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: I was frequently asked for sound design and audio mixing tasks in the past. I am also experienced in ghost production.
