Interview with Jan Åkesson
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Robert "Mutt" Lang, Bob Rock, Dan Huff, Max Martin, Abba, Trevor Rabin, Peter Collins, Rainbow, Whitesnake, Yes, Deep Purple are great sources of inspiration.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Two records with Infinite & Divine, I think we have good songs with a very good singer. I have produced, play all the instruments, mixed. I also wrote the songs (together with the singer) It is close to my heart.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Writes a lot of songs for Frontier's bands and artists
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I'm fairly new here, although the people who hired me have been good to deal with
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, It is so easy to mix in the box with total recall when working with several projects at the same time. Then I think it sounds superb
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will always do my best to give the song what it needs
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love making music and the joy it brings
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: If I do a test mix, I usually answer that I don't because there is reference music of mine..
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: As for mixing a song, what the client sends is what I have to deal with. Sometimes it happens that the client may have an expectation of something completely different, but then it's more about me producing and not just mixing. It's probably just ignorance and trying to explain as best as possible doesn't happen often.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What sound are they looking for, deadline
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I am attentive and patient so it will be good for the client
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My guitar
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Almost 35 years.. I started playing guitar when I was 12-13 years old in a bunch of local bands, but over time became more and more interested in also writing songs and producing.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Melodic
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Def Leppard, Pink, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift because they have such good songs
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Reference songs are good, when it comes to mixing, I think it's good to take a lot of breaks as the ears get tired and then judgment can fail. can be good to work 30 min with a 15 min break..
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock, Pop, Metal
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Patience, Production, melodies
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I always try to get a mix so that all the ingredients are heard (so you can walk in the mix) it has to sound beautiful regardless of whether it's the worst death metal or Pop country..
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: It depends a bit, if I'm going to mix for clients, I listen to their demo mix and requests to form a scope of what the client is looking for. A reference song is always good to have. When I produce and create tracks, it is built afterwards with everything that entails...usually start with a drum goove and build accordingly.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: The studio is based around Cubase on a Mac pro computer with Uad's Apollo sound card and plugins. Studio monitors are an NHT system and headphones are Focal Stellia with Focal Arche headphone amplifier. A lot of different guitars and guitar preamps....
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
