Interview with José Laguna
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Vocal Recording, Music Production, Sound Design, and Creative Direction are the top services/skills that I'm usually hired for.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: David Foster, Andrea Bocelli, Charles Aznavour, Ennio Morricone, Hans Zimmer, Patrick Doyle, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, John Mayer, Michael Bublé, Johnny Pacheco, Juan Luis Guerra, J Balvin.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I'm equipped with ProTools 10 for recording and mixing vocals, Ableton Live for music production and sound design, a UAD Apollo Twin interface (sweet!), DT770's, Neuman TLM49 Microphone, Avalon Preamp, and I use both my Mac tower and/or my Macbook Pro depending on the purpose.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Everything begins with the story of the piece. Even if someone isn't aware they have one, there is always one present. I'm passionate about guiding folks to see that. Once we all see and embrace it, creating becomes fun and we have something tangible to work towards even if we veer off, we do it intentionally because the initial vision was understood. "Songcrafting" then takes place: Song story & lyrics 1st, then lyrical melodies, then various progressions and emotions of music and textures are created to compare and decide on the best path to bring the emotion to life. Once agreed, the refining process takes place and this is where the sleeves get rolled up for "surgery". Enter "perfectionist mode" :) Agreed upon revisions and reviewing continues until the project's sweetness is agreed upon and then Bravo, we're ready to share it with the world!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: With my crafting of songs and deliverg vocals, I strive to bring the kind of life force that makes one recognize that life is actually real, that life is beautiful, and that a passionate life can also be ours if we only but step forward.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: The crossroad between "Creative Discernment" & "Cultural Relevance"
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Typically, I work on Popular music pieces, Ballads, R&B, Hip Hop/Trap, or film score/commercial pieces with vocals on them.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I would encourage the importance of being able to "see and describe" how you want the song to move your audience...and then to go for it, to create in that direction!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Andrea Bocelli. I'm passionate about the Italian language, especially singing in it. I'd very much love to create a ballad with him that lives in both English and Italian and helps to redefine what love means in this world.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: When I hear my work, I feel a sense of "Elegance" and "Heart-pounding Passion".
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: After college I bought my first keyboard and decided I wanted to sing and do music. I had no experience in music prior. I found my voice, a vision, and nothing but time in front of me to build my craft in meeting that vision. Through that time I was in and out of corporate america. I'm currently working on completing my debut album which will exist in all of the 5 langauges I sing in. It's the "soundtrack" to a short narrative I created to bring to live musically. I'm most excited about bringing that to life. As I work towards completing that, I bring that same passion and vision seeking approach in helping others realize their music vision.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: laptop, microphone, headphones, (power chord lol), massage chair, and a juicer!
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: When at the crossroads of making decisions, the best question to surrender to is "What is your heart telling you?"
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually ask questions that help clarify their vision, timeline, and where they're at in the process of that vision.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: What I look like vs. what I sound like. People always ask me, "Is that really you singing?" :)
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: With respect to singing, they ask if I've ever had formal training and I tell them that I'm self-taught and still waiting on Mr. Miyagi. Also, they usually ask where I learn all those languages, and I share that I'm Romanian & Panamanian so I learned Spanish & Romanian in the household. I also share that I took French and Italian in middle and high school and they all came together many years later when I found music, or when music found me :)
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The responsibility of contributing to society's emotional intelligence.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To give my very best.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: It dependssssss :) But I'd have to go with Analog....because Digital is like a slam dunk and Analog is like a finger roll :)
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I'm brand new one here and don't think I know anyone on here as of yet.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I had a chance to share earlier on a previous question that I'm currently working on completing my debuty concept album. It's a short narrative I created and I'm making the soundtrack to it which affords the opportunity for me to leverage the 5 languages I sing in. I'm very excited about sharing this with the public. I especially can't wait for my country Romania to get their hands and hearts on it.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My most favorite project so far was a collaboration with a composer friend of mine. We took an old record by Charles Aznavour called "Sur Ma Vie", which was a bit upbeat and we softened it and made creative sonic decisions that brought it to life and completely different way. It ended up being a more paced singing approach poured over a bed of lush cellos and piano accompaniment. This was for a short film I was working on. It was a beautiful experience and an even more beautiful final product. I have the song posted on my samples here on my profile. It's called "Sur Ma Vie".
