Interview with Brooke Toia

Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Can't spill yet.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm working on a bunch of projects at the moment. As well as my own new project - Penny Ivy. Stay tuned.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I'll always strive to make you happy with what I deliver, if you want changes or extra parts or a redo, I'll do it. It's important that the track has all the things you want.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love that feeling when a melody comes out of no where and sometimes I even surprise myself how catchy it'll be!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: They ask the delivery time frame, and generally I deliver things pretty fast - IF - i don't have other jobs at the same time. I always let the client know.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Well some people don't think music is a job so there's that! haha
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I always ask if they have any idea what they THINK they want their track to sound like at the end - tell me! I want to get it right for you.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I think just always be honest and transparent about what you want out of hiring someone like me. If you're not upfront from the get go it can stall the right flow for the creative person to get the right end results that you want.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Guitar, endless paper and pens, food and water (duh).
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I had no idea being a topliner was a legitimate profession! I feel like I could have gained an extra 5 years of working my ass off if I'd know it at 17! I've been working as a writer since 2018 (23) and it's been an uphill battle... but what does miley sing.. "ain't about how fast i get there, ain't about what's on the other side. It's the climb". It's been a journey of lessons, wins and losses and I wouldn't change a thing.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: It took me a long time to stop caring if my ideas sounded cheesy. People like cheese. If it feels good to the ear, people will like it!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Too many I can't pick one!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Nothing is perfect. Make sure you're don't box yourself into what you think something SHOULD sound like.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, EDM, K-Pop, J-Pop, Indie, Rock, Scandipop, Reggaeton/ Dancehall.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I think I'm fairly strong at melodies, lyrics and vocals... but somedays lyrics are stronger than melodies or vice versa!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I always like to study the client a little to see what they like or are envisioning for the track. I hope to always capture the right energy and make my co-collaborator as happy as i am with the results!
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I love to just hit record when i first hear a track or instrumental. 99% of the time I can always hear melodies and spit out sounds when I hear anything. I might do 2 or 3 takes right through, then chop up anything that stuck or sticks out! Then I'll share with my client the ideas I think are best suited for the track and see what they think. There may be some back and forth before the client is happy with all the rough melodies. Then I'll add lyrics and record a rough of that, see if the client is happy with the concept and vibe. Then final vocals are recorded ASAP and sent off.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a home studio that I've just finished setting up. I am based in Brisbane, Australia and spend every day working on music for myself and my clients. It is a small office space, fully soundproofed with studio monitors and an sE2200ii microphone.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm very inspired by writers and artists that produce their own material, as well as producers that can do it all! For example: Ryan Tedder, Esther Dean, Timabalnd, Charlie Puth, Lauv, Bebe Rexha, Doja Cat, Sigrid.. the list goes on.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I commonly work as a vocalist for clients and producers all over the world. I am always keen to collaborate with artists or other creatives to help them finish a song that they love, whether it's lyrics, melodies, vocals and or vocal engineering!
