Interview with Anna Yanova-Cattoor
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The most important project in my life is my band - Two Cities One World. I am proud of everything we've done so far!! My husband and I are the core of the band, we create the music, lyrics and arrangements and we also take care of all the business associated with the band.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: My new album! About to start recording and producing it:)
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not yet, but I have a huge network of musicians outside of Sound Better.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Honesty - I will tell you if I can provide the best vocals specifically for your track. If I don't think I am a perfect fit, I can recommend someone who is.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: That I get to be creative and expressive. :)
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: "Can you sing that?" - Yes.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That singing is easy. Seriously. The voice is produced by a group of muscles, cartilages and ligaments. It's just like any other group muscle in your body - it needs daily work to be able to stay in good shape! Being a studio vocalist is also not an easy task because you have to be perfect with everything you do - intonation, emotion, phrasing... But still - I love it!!! Even though it's not easy - I can't help it - I love singing!! :))
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask them what exactly do they want to achieve with the project.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I don't have an advice.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: An acoustic guitar, trumpet, cajon, egg shaker and a piano. What else would I need?! :D
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have singing all my life - I sung in front of 20,000 people since I was 13 years old. When I was 22 I graduated from Musicians Institute, Hollywood and was given the "Outstanding Musician" award! Since then, I have been composing, recording, performing my own music + working as a session musician and songwriter.
Q: How would you describe your style?
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Any of these guys: Snarky Puppy, Jose James, D'angelo, India Arie, Jack Johnson, Stevie Wonder. Because they are absolutely amazing - creative, fun, free!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Keep learning and practicing your instrument daily! And jam with musicians who are at least on your level or better than you!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Funk, jazz, soul, pop, blues.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I have a very clean tone and warm timbre; I have mastered my voice - have great technique and can control my voice completely. To stay on my game, I exercise my voice at least 5 times a week (that is just working on vocal tech. I don't count gigs, rehearsals, jam sessions and recording time as exercising my voice).
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Soul! :)
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My work process depends on each project. I specifically design each vocal track based on what the client needs.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a recording booth at home. It's completely isolated with the proper materials, so the sound is very good. I use a custom made one-of-a-kind condenser microphone and also Logic Pro 9 to record with! :)
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Snarky Puppy, Jose James, D'angelo, India Arie, Jack Johnson, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and many more.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I record vocals, song-write, music consultations etc. :)
