Interview with Brett Caporn
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Being of service to Humanity via the making and releasing of great records that celebrate our humanity and rebellion.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Anyone can do it. Well yes that is kind of correct - but to get to a pro level it actually means years of experience, $$$ on the right equipment and investing in a mentor that can deliver pro training.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Just do it - you will be impressed what a pro can do to your beloved music, I am confident of that. Plus you may also land a record deal!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A generator for power, my JBL studio monitors, laptop for production, my LTD bass, my bass rig.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Heavy, with awesome Bass!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Infected Rain - because I love them all and love their sound and fun vibe. It's going to happen one day - fingers crossed.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I like to have a 24hr break between mixing or mastering. I generally do the work and finish it, then have a break and listen again the next day. The break allows my ears to have a rest from the song and then listen again with fresh ears. This usually allows me to hear anything that needs fixing / tweaking.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock & heavy metal. I have also a history and much experience with producing and mixing electronic music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I feel I get a pretty good mix on the bass. I am a bass player myself so I have focused obsessively over achieving the best bass tones for over 20 years - this spills over into guitars and my drum mix.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: 20 years of experience.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Attract client (sometimes by way of a FREE MIX & TEST MASTER), send this thru to artist / band, impress them and land the job, client pays 50% deposit, do the job, send thru finished job, any revisions (up to 3), finalize and get remainder of payment, send thru finished job, offer record release / distribution if appropriate.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I built my own studio here at home. I converted a backyard color-bond garage (we call them sheds here in Australia) into a studio. Beefed up the existing walls and then built a room-within-a-room. It is quite soundproof, even with a full rock band blasting away inside you only get a bit of bleed from the bass. In 2021 we are upgrading the studio and building a proper control room attached.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Musicians: Black Sabbath - Tony, Geezer, Bill, Ozzy and Ronnie , Mike Patton and all his bands, Lena Scissorhands and the Infected Rain lads. Producers: Jordan Valeriote at Hardcore Music Studio.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Remote Mixing & Mastering. I also run a record label, Little Rascal Records, so I commonly get demo submissions. Some of these end up as releases on my label. We are best know for electronic music, but recently we started our rock & heavy metal sub-label, The Bent Tree.
