Hi there! I’m Julius - a Berlin based professional vocalist and songwriter with 17+ years of vocal experience.
I’ve been active live on stage, in songwriting sessions and in studios for more than ten years now.
At the Popakademie Mannheim, I studied Vocals & Songwriting for 3 years and graduated as a Bachelor of Music.
Aside from my german solo project, I also do demo work for international acts like Michael Minds and DJ Dani Avila. Moreover, I've sung for famous artist projects live. So I was supporting Xavier Naidoo, one of Germany's biggest artists live on his "Bei meiner Seele" tour through Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Interview with Julius Olschowski

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: At the moment I'm working on my own music project. I'm writing songs which I'm going to soon play live.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: I like that my job is so versatile and I love to get in touch with talented people all over the world. It gives me so much inspiration and the chance to learn new things everyday.

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: If I was on a desert island I would take a solar panel, my laptop, my interface, my microphone and my Korg nanoKEY midi controller with me. But actually the most important thing is my songbook where I write down al my scripts. I love it to write down my first lyric ideas with a pen on paper.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I've been doing music since I've been 6 years old. I started with playing the piano and some years later with singing. At the age of 14 I got my first vocal lessons and also played in a band as a lead singer. Here I gained not just live experience - I also wrote my first songs. At the end of my teenage years I got in touch with the "music production world" and DAW's like Logic and started to record, edit and produce my vocals. In Mannheim, Germany, I studied Vocals & Songwriting for 3 years and graduated as a Bachelor of Music. In the last six years after university I worked on my own music, wrote and also recorded songs for other artists. Moreover, I've been working as a vocal coach in one on one sessions and I've been leading vocal workshops for companies as a team building event.

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: I would describe my style as "Indie-Mainstream". I think my voice has a color that also fits well to current chart music and international pop productions. But I love to create unpredictable surprise moments in my songs, where my vocal color differs and my melodies swim against the stream.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: I work on a lot of pop music. Currently I'm working on my own German music project and writing a lot of lyrics for German artists.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: My process is really simple... My clients send me their reference track (mp3 or wav) and their idea for the song. Moreover, I need an instrumental of their song and the lyrics. After I’ve recorded everything, I do a professional editing (comping, tuning with Melodyne & Autotune etc.) I deliver dry vocals with no FX to them. One revision is included in the price. If the client wishes I also mix the edited vocal as well for 150$ on top.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: In my studio I'm currently working with an iMac, a UAD Arrow Interface, a Shure KSM32 Mic and Yamaha HS8 speakers. The DAW I'm working with is: Logic Pro X. For my vocal editings and productions I'm using for example some UAD plugins, the FabFilter and the Waves Bundle, Melodyne and Autotune.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: The most common type of work for my clients is to sing for my client's projects. That means they hire me to bring their ideas and visions to a professional level. Moreover clients book me to create unique and catchy melodies and hooklines for their song or piece of music.

  19. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  20. A: I would like to work with Chris Martin and Jessie J. They're fascinating me - great artists and awesome singers.

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: The customer should take their time for a good research here on this platform. Sometimes the extra mile is the best way. After finding their "perfect fit" a clear, respectful communication is often important for a good result.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: For all the ones out there doing vocal recordings on their own: Do everything step by step - one focus. When you're recording you record. When you're chosing takes you chose takes. When you're editing your vocals you edit them and so on. If you mix the steps you possibly risk to lose the overall picture. Especially your vocal performance and its emotion may suffer and you probably have too many different vocal colors within your song. So stay focused, capture the emotion and just sing at first! Cause the feeling wins every time.

  25. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  26. A: I ask them for their visions, desires, if they have some references - and I ask them for their deadline. So I get some impressions, can make a plan for myself and basically check if I'm the right musician for their project.

  27. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  28. A: I prefer a good mixture. When we talk about vocal recording and production I personally like it when they sound a bit analog and not to "hifi".

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: My strongest skill is my voice, the ability to transfer emotions and to create great and catchy hooklines.

  31. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  32. A: My clients get a unique vocal track with a great feeling that fits perfectly to their song - of course in high class studio quality.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: The feeling/emotion that fits to the message.
