Interview with Brandon Yancey
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: EN ROUTE! I flew to Canada to get that done. The only time I have been outside the country for music. I wrote the song and convinced my girlfriend to sing it ( it was pretty tough). She killed it and loved to after! Probably the proudest moment I've had as a writer thus far.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: EPs. I prefer to live my way into my own music. I love to have something more to say than just the typical.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Quincy. Once you find him, listen to his samples, and hire him, tell him I sent ya lol
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. They both have their place in this new world.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: We will create a product that we love. I welcome criticism. I welcome open dialogue about any thing that I write, sing, or choose melodically. The truth I am here to perform a service. I would rather you be satisfied with what you are paying for.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: It's all about money. I won't lie, it would be great to be in a situation where I get paid enough to support my family off of music. But I love to hear how people connected to the stories because I really put my all in these songs.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What story do you want to tell? How do you want the listener to feel?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Please hire someone that will desire the resonance of your music. Someone that will care enough about the little nuances of the project, that you can rest easy. I worry about the little things. I worry about what a listener can identify with that will keep them going back to our song.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Warm Audio Mic, Logic Pro X, and an Interface.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I am currently a waiter by day and a songwriter by night. I have been doing this "song" and dance for a little over 3 years. I discovered I had a talent for writing when I joined a group. We needed to start making songs for our singles and I had never really written for anyone before. One of my group members told me to try and write something that hit home and it ended with a beautiful song. I have been writing ever since.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Current. I listen to a lot of music. I love to see whats happening now but I also listen to a lot of what was so that I can see whats coming. I love to mix in some modern with a old feel.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Disruptors. They are ahead of the curve. You can learn a lot by watching someone be different.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: RnB, EDM, Hip-Hop. I think these best suit my skillset and are the requests I get the most.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I think melodies are my forte. I usually find the words to fit the melody.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I am beginning to put my home studio together. For now I work on Logic Pro X. Warm Audio Mic and Interface. Nothing too fancy just to get the job done.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The result. It forms from nothing but can become something someone can’t live without. It’s fascinating to me.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always be open to post production. It makes the song sound cohesive.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Cadences are my specialty. I try to mesh my flow with the songs flow. Sometimes disruptive, sometimes easy going.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I listen to the track over and over until I can hum a melody and then I try to picture what mood this puts me in. Then I brainstorm a topic within that mood and fill in the verses, then the chorus.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Awww man. Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway are my favorite. Michael Jackson is transcendent through time. A person I look to for the blueprint on trying to tell the forever story. Jay-Z for his art of wordplay. Biggie for his story telling. Tupac for an overall mindful message.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Conversational therapy that turns into a meaningful and thoughtful song. If you can tell me what you want to talk about I can pick the words for you.
