Interview with Justas Kulikauskas

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: Yes! Matty Harris and Denis Emery. Both very different but amazing sound engineers!

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: Oh..that a cellist can’t produce popular music..oh yes I can..

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: A lot of questions, but all mostly concerning the vision and vibe.

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Believe in your music!

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: Well I am a 3rd generation cellist in my family, so I started learning since i was born.. raised in totally classical family, played solo with orchestras since i was 11. but it wasn’t enough for me. When I was 15 I started improvising and create music by my self and with a friend who’s a guitarist. Then I moved to loopstation(even got into loopstation world championship final in Frankfurt) and then I got into producing electronic music and combining it with cello, mostly because I didn’t find producer or sound engineer who understood what I want..it’s been i think about 9 or 10years ago..

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: Again - Flume..it would be amazing to do something out of this world together..

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: There are no rules when you know how to play..

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: I guess bringing to life what sounds in my head. It wasn’t always like that, specially around 8years ago when you here what you want to do, but get something totally different..I call it lack of skill..

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: Well it may sound a little funny but most of my projects have a word “magic” in the title so I like to think I add magic. :D

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: First it’s very chaotic when i try to find a perfect sounding theme, chords, textures or whatever until I say “wow, this is it!” from that point I usually go pretty fast and have a clear vision of what i want it to sound like.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: My studio setup is very conservative and simple. UAD Apollo Twin, Softube Console1, Rode nt5 pair, Rode NT1,AEA R44 and of course my best asset - my cello!

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: Flume..he is god! I get inspired every time i listen to his work..and then i try to do something more crazy then usual..:)

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Most commonly I create cello parts or an entire cello playback for a project, but first of all I listen to the track/project and decide if i can add value to it. If the client already has a clear vision of what he wants of course it’s easy then and i will do it really well. But I’m always more exited when you can add something of your self. Thats what i love about music, combining different worlds into one.
