ROB GENTRY on SoundBetter

I specialize in high-quality piano, synth, and keyboard tracks, drawing on my 20 years of experience recording, performing and touring with the best in the world, including Quincy Jones, Pete Tong, Georgio Moroder, and Damian Lazarus.

From the Sydney Opera House to the Royal Albert Hall, and the Hollywood Bowl. I've traveled the world playing keyboards, across a broad range of genres. Whether you need a beautiful piano track to accompany your folk song or a high energy synth bass part for your EDM track, I'vegot you covered.

I grew up in the U.K, studying Jazz and Classical piano at Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Spent many years working professionally in London before moving to Los Angeles 4 years ago.

I have worked with Rob on a number of projects with a number of artists over the years since he moved to US. He is hands down one of the most mind blowingly talented musicians I've ever met. His piano and keyboard skills are straight up SICK! Whatever your musical needs in whatever genre Rob Gentry has you covered and then some. He is a wonderful human and above all, a consummate professional. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Rob is an outstanding multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, arranger, and producer. He’s played with me in my live band on numerous occasions and he never disappoints. Five stars across the board!

Interview with ROB GENTRY

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I love my CLARA-NOVA 'Cold Water' remix I produced recently. The groove is strong, and the elements I added (celeste, mellotron, bass guitar) really set it apart from the original.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: I think a hybrid of analog and digital is the way to go. I love the immediacy and tactile nature of analog, as well as the more limited options, alongside the convenience and limitless options of digital.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: It's what I love! I get to work with amazing humans and make music that brings joy to so many

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Be specific about what you want. Provide listening examples and references for what you want. Don't be afraid to ask questions, even if you think they're silly!

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: Go with your gut and don't overthink it. First thought is normally the best one. You can always come back and change it, but concentrate on committing and finishing a full version of your track.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: I've been playing keyboards since I was 5. Studied Jazz and Classical Piano at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Started working professionally whilst still at school.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: A lot of Electronic music. I draw on my years of experience playing jazz, soul and classical within that

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: Depending on the brief, I open up a new Ableton session and listen through once. Then I choose a patch and play through. Normally the 1st or 2nd takes are the best

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: COMPUTER: Macbook Pro running Ableton Live 10. Various 3rd party plugins including Spectrasonics Keyscape & Omnisphere, Uhe D.I.V.A, Fabfilter Q3/MB Pro/L2 Pro etc OUTBOARD: RME Babyface Pro. Lunchbox with Heritage Audio '73 Jr and '73 EQ, API 527, A Designs P1 KEYS: Nord Stage 3, Moog Sub 37, Moog Sirin, Sequential OB6, Novation Circuit, Kawai Upright Piano GUITARS: Vintage JV Squire P Bass w/flatwounds, Custom Fender Telemaster EFFECTS: Strymon Timeline & Bigsky, WMD Geiger Counter, RC Booster, Whammy V4, EHX Pitchfork

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: Coming up with the perfect keyboard take. Both the tone and performance

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: I'm very quick

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: I bring what I think it needs to take it to the next level, whilst supporting the vocal, or lead instrument, throughout
