Interview with Mastering The Mix

Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
I recently stem mastered a track for Armada, a very influencial electronic label. The artist was Max Vangeli, an extremely talented producer. He has used the best engineers in the world and he was extremely happy with my work. I am now mastering his album.
Analog or digital and why?
Digital. Taking audio from digital to analog and back again can have negative effects on the audio, even with the best A/D converters. With the advancement of digital plugins, keeping it in the box makes more sense.
What's your 'promise' to your clients?
I'm not happy until you are happy. We'll keep working until you are completely satisfied with the final result.
What do you like most about your job?
I love that producers and songwriters trust me with their most precious assets. They put their trust in me to take their material and make it better. When I fullfil their expectations it gives me a great buzz.
If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
1. MacBook Pro with Logic. 2. PMCs 3. UAD Apollo 4. All the necessary cables to connect items 1, 2 & 3. 5. Internet
What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
I have been a musician since I started having drum lessons at 6 years old. To cut a long story short, I got a degree in drumming when I was 21. I also play guitar, sing and write songs. I am also a bit of nerd so I got very interested in the technical side of production. And, this has all lead to me being a mastering engineer with a very musical approach to the technical process.
Can you share one music production tip?
If I had only one tip to give to give to a producer or songwriter, it would be to keep your music dynamic. Over compression and limiting is (in my opinion) the most disrespectful and harmful thing you can do to a piece of music.
Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
Most of my clients come to me for stem mastering. They prefer to give me complete control over the balance of their track. This usually speeds up the mastering process as I can fix more problems with stems than I can with a single file, as used in stereo mastering.
