Julianna Sma on SoundBetter

Producing as Shebloom, I'm an international vocalist that can channel melodies in seconds inspired by tribal, soul, and hip-hop music. I'm known for my youthful tone. 15 years of lessons, performances, recording, and songwriting! I debuted at Imagine Music Festival in 2016-17, and on Atlanta's NPR in 2018.

Services: Vocals (Harmonies, Toplines, and Songwriting).
Key and Guitar recordings. Yes, I can do it all for you! Let's make a hit!

Recording: I am advanced in Logic Pro. Please communicate if you want me to clean up the tracks before sending (silence in between, mouth sounds, fade ins/outs) for an extra 50$.

Songwriting: I am advanced in the following genres: EDM, Singer-Songwriter, House, Alternative, R&B.

Background: My journey in singing is full of dynamics. My origins started in contemporary and gospel church music, with professional vocal instruction for 7 years. Then I developed EDM and singer-songwriter abilities, following Neo-Soul/R&B melody and lyric studies in Atlanta. I've sang at a handful of Atlanta-based festivals with DJs and with my band, in genres including House, EDM, and Soul.

In 2018 I graduated with a certificate in Joel A. Katz's Music and Entertainment Business Program from Kennesaw State with studies in Audio Engineering (I record myself using UA hardware so you get the good stuff)

Recent Successes: In 2021 I released a self-produced EP via "Shebloom" on Spotify/Apple. At the top of 2020, I opened at Atlanta's Buckhead Theatre for Allen Stone– it sold out to around 1500 people.

Julianna helped topline a track of mine (wrote the lyrics, melodies, harmonies; soup to nuts) and I will surely be working with her again. She has an amazing voice that could sound good in any musical genre, as well as a deep knowledge of music and a creativity that took my song to a whole new level.

Interview with Julianna Sma

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I co-produced and sang on my dear friend Dara Carter's album "Hello Freedom" in 2019. I am proud because of the energy and quickness I brought to the studio sessions, and freely gave her lyrics and melodies to help complete songs, finish the puzzle. Some of my melodies were the remembered hooks people would sing at her gigs!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Sync Licensing projects.....very tedious! And eventually, a new vocal sample pack! (Will be available on www.shebloom.co)

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Naomi Wild. She's dope!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: ANALOG. Authentic, back to the origins, warmth– it's just a feeling.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will give you the best I can give you, every time, on YOUR time.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: It is my soul's purpose, my spirit's mission, my divine calling. So thanks for supporting why I exist.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: They ask me when I can get the demo back to them, I usually say within 3 days, or sooner. They've asked me only a couple times if I can give them different options of a lead, I say of course!

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That every singer can be a self-recording vocalist. With my background in mixing, I am able to intentionally place my vocals where they "fit", without over-crowding your frequency spectrum or randomly tossing melodies in places where you wanted the song to breathe. My ears are well-trained, and I can both record for your demo and help you hear how my vocals can be mixed within your demo.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What kinds of vocals do you want for your song? Do you want me throw in extra adlibs for you to play with? What do you think your song is trying to speak to people on?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Share with me what direction you want the song to go, but give me the freedom to show you what I can intuitively do with your song!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: AKG mic, XLR cable, interface, laptop, WIFI(router?).???... SO I CAN GET YOUR DEMOS.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: My career path has always been being a singer-songwriter. I've been performing around Atlanta, recording for producers, teaching music lessons for kids, and anything that could help me further myself as a singer (session work, background vocalist). I've been doing this professionally for over 7 years. I've been doing music my entire life.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I'm soft, earthy, ethereal, but with a hardness from Atlanta old-school hip-hop. My bright and colorful melody lines are influenced by alternative R&B music (I'm always listening to the organs, the electric keys, the upright pianos) that's soulful, diminished, open-ended, rarely resolving.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I'd like to work with Odesza because their production took me to another universe when I first began hearing them years ago. I believe my kind of vocals and lyrics would compliment their soundscapes and create HITS.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Get the ideas out as fast you can. Vomit it out: all instrumentation you hear, all melodies. Do the arranging on your NEXT session.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Pop, R&B, House, Hip-Hop, Lo-Fi, and Singer-Songwriter.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Although my voice has attracted my success and fanbase, I believe my strongest skillset is my songwriting. Let me show you how I can create a world for you within one song.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring the final touch to the song, because I am finalizing the story: something the audience can grip onto, an emotion to follow, an image to explore. I bring my feathery, youthful sound to compliment the other frequency aspects, and heavenly harmonies only a professional could create.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: Currently, I am in a room-treated vocal booth inside my home, using panels, a rug, microphone shield, and acoustic blankets to deaden the reverb. I have the bright and raw AKG C414 behind a pop filter going into Universal Audio interface. My DAW is Logic Pro X 10, my MIDI is Arturia Mini Lab and the Yamaha 73-key P121. For recording I use the Sennheiser headphones to cancel out noise bleed and also make me “feel” the music better as I’m singing, and gold Mogami XLRs.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: I am inspired by Alicia Keys, SZA, Ariana Grande, Maggie Rogers, Grimes, Hiatus Kaiyote, Mac Miller, Kendrick Lamar, Joni Mitchell, Joe Cocker, Janis Joplin, Simon and Garfunkel.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I do pop and r&b lead vocals and stacked harmonies for productions needing a youthful, bright female tone, combined with catchy, unique lyrics complimenting the story they’re trying to tell through their soundscape.

  43. Q: What's your typical work process?

  44. A: After getting a feel of the soundscape, I begin melody-mapping: finding which section of the song is going to be each melodic pattern's home. After exploring melody, lyrics develop either in-the-moment or writing concepts and conversations in my journal. A theme or visual has to form, and I make sure it remains consistent throughout the song. After getting a strong lead down, I intentionally stack harmonies in places where the song could stand out more. I like to highlight certain production moments with the added harmonies, or a certain lyric. When lyrics and melodies are complete, I clean up all the stems, mix it to fit more into the demo, carefully fiddle with delay and reverb (when needed), EQ, and any other plugin I might think could boost the overall production. I share these insights with the producer, and bounce out raw stems along with the mixed demo when it is sounding "vibe" worthy.
