Interview with Marcus Saint
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: WesTheWriter has amazing melodies and lyrics if anyone needs a dope writer and doesn't want to work with me ahah
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. Easier to work with
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Everything
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Just stay in constant contact. Make sure everything you want is what you're getting out of the track.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Just my mic and my Mac. I wouldn't need anything else, just make voice memos of all the different sounds I want.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started off as a live sound engineer working with Tasha Cobbs, Canton Jones, and Deon kipping for concerts through my church organization. I then got into writing for the choir, then production. I've been producing seriously for about a year or two now.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Creative and innovative
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Diplo. I want him to give me his sound packs so I can be better than him.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Study your craft!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, trap, hiphop. Sometimes Gospel/Christian based tracks.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Some secrets I have to keep to myself :) I will say, I'm really good with time / turn around rates.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A HOME !! I bring completion, peace, a "home" for the song. I make music sound whole and bring out the missing pieces you didn't even know existed.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I spend most of my time just free styling (with production and with lyrics) rather it's playing random chords, or singing out my beat first and then turning it into a full track later. I like to see what comes to mind naturally first and make the track seem as authentic as possible. Once I come up with a rough skeleton of the track I go in and tweak things and perfect any edges etc.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Mostly I work from my home studio which consist of my Mac book pro, scarlet audio interface, two Yamaha speakers and may roll seaboard midi. I work off of Logic Pro X , but occasionally I dabble in other DAW's such as FL or ProTools.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: When it comes to production, I really admire works from Max Martin and Diplo. Max Martin being the best producer in the modern pop world, and Diplo's quirky sounds always stand out to me. When it comes to writing I really am inspired by Ester Dean. Not only is her writing style impressive to me, but so is her work ethic.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Typically I do a lot of custom production. Artist will bring me a concept of a song they want to bring to life, or play me a demo and have me turn it into something bigger than they'd imagine. Its truly an honor and my favorite part of the job.
